Check Out A New Collaborative Track From The Outfit, TX and Shuttle.
Two weeks ago, the now-Dallas-based hip-hop trio The Outfit, TX was grabbing a slice of pizza with DJ Sober when they ran into another Dallas-based musician, DJ and producer Shuttle.
“We were just kicking it,” says Mel, one-third of the fast-rising rap crew. “It was our first time meeting him, but we ended up going to his home studio [immediately after lunch]. And, let me tell you, that place is a palace.”
Never the shy types, Mel and his The Outfit, TX cohorts Dorian and JayHawk immediately started “messing around” on the gear laid out in the spot — synthesizers, drum machines, all of it. Just a couple minutes in, inspired by Shuttle's gear and his suggestions on their dabblings, they'd realized they'd written a beat. Within an hour, they had a hook. Not long thereafter, they had the verses to go with it.
“We felt like George Clinton and Bootsy Collins in like 1975,” Mel says with a laugh. “We were just making something happen. All that shit happened in less than two hours.”
The result? A new The Outfit, TX track co-produced by Shuttle called “Stalactight,” notable because a) to date, The Outfit's mostly made its own beats, and b) the track jams with the same token, drugged-out allure that the rest of The Outfit's catalog boasts, and yet somehow comes off even trippier.
Also? You can expect more from these new collaborators down the line.
“Hell yeah,” Mel says, emphatically about that possibility. “We were supposed to get back in the studio on Monday night!”
A video shoot down in Houston delayed that, though. Still, Mel assures: More is coming.
