Make Things Up Again.
Says Raymond Loewy, aka the industrial designer responsible for the Exxon logo, the Greyhound bus, Coca-Cola vending machines and the Lucky Strike package among other things, the secret to selling anything in the world is MAYA, which stands for “Most Advanced Yet Acceptable.” To further explain, he says, “to sell something surprising, make it familiar; and to sell something familiar, make it surprising.”
It’s an interesting way to think about design and marketing, and a useful approach we can all try to apply to our jobs this week. But we probably don’t have to sell you too hard on the fact that there’s many ways to make merry around town this Christmas week. May your days be merry and bright and, most of all, acceptable.
