Yuck It Up With Todd Barry at Sons of Hermann Hall.
“Nevermind Friday,” said The Cure's Robert Smith as I explained to him all of the cool things happening tonight. “I'm in love with Thursday!”
There really is a lot happening.
French musician and my future boyfriend, Yann Tiersen (of Amelie fame), will charm your face off at Trees. Also, as a big middle finger to porches and decks everywhere, People on Vacation have opted to perform at AT&T's Patio Sessions. If the sound of laughter doesn't curdle your insides and make you kick small animals, consider heading to Sons of Hermann Hall to watch comedian Todd Barry tell jokes (rubber chicken not guaranteed). Or, y'know, you could swing by The Undermain Theater to watch the classic play, The Birthday Party.
Todd Barry at Sons of Hermann Hall
You might remember Todd from the HBO show Flight of the Conchords, where he played the bongo-playing third Conchord and eventual member of the Demetri Martin supergroup, The Crazy Dogggz (featuring their smash hit “Doggy Bounce”). No word yet on if he's bringing the bongos to this performance.
The Birthday Party at Undermain Theater
“We are not too fond of this play, young chap” was the general response to Harold Pinter's The Birthday Party, when it debuted in London in 1958. I'm sure if those stodgy fools had known back then that The Birthday Party would go on to become a classic, they would crack open their brains like it's the latest edition of Tiger Beat: Rock Hudson Edition in an attempt to stop being so dang wrong all the time.
Rewriting Art History with Betsy Williamson at Mercantile Coffee House
If I was holding a lecture called “Rewriting Art History,” you better believe that it would include fascinating tidbits such as “Picasso was a German nun” and “Georgia O'Keefe was allergic to smoked sausage.” Luckily for you, local artist Betsy Williamson is holding the lecture, so it will be more, um, refined.
People on Vacation at AT&T PAC Patio Sessions
Join People on Vacation (Ryan Hamilton from Smile Smile and Jaret Reddick from Bowling for Soup) for their AT&T Patio Session. Depending on how you feel about patios, you can consider it a vacation for yourself!
The Clown Gym at Richardson Civic Center
It's everyone's favorite faux-quirky phobia come to life at the Richardson Civic Center tonight, where you can get fit while clownin' around. Those who show up in full clown make-up will get several high-fives and a free self-esteem boost.
Yann Tiersen at Trees
Over a year ago, during what local experts called a “Snowpocolypse,” the abominable weather prevented Tiersen from making his scheduled performance at the Loft. Unless we're in for a sequel, (Snowpocolypse 2: Snowmaggedon), Tiersen will finally return to Dallas tonight.
