Bobby Sessions Is Feeling Throwed At No. 3.

The North Texas music scene has really come into its own the past 12 months. There hasn't been a year in recent memory when so many local artists appeared on the Billboard charts, played Saturday Night Live and other late night television programs, or otherwise appeared in the national spotlight. Here, as we've done in years past, we're highlighting what we think are the 100 best songs locally-tied of the year. The thing is, as far as this list is concerned, we're judging the quality of the songs irrespective of the popularity of the people putting them out — meaning, you're just as likely to have a song by a Grammy-winning act sandwiched between a couple of high school bands. Hey, it's just more interesting that way. Also keeping with tradition, we'll be rolling out the list in smaller, more digestible portions every weekday through the end of the month, complete with embedded streams of each. We think that gives each of these more than deserving acts a little more shine, and it also gives you a little more time to really check out each of these high quality tunes — including, presumably, a few that you may have missed upon their initial release.

Thanks in part to Mel from The Outfit's frequent missives for Vice's Noisey blog, and bolstered by the breakout successes of ex-pats like Justus and Post Malone, Dallas' hip-hop scene really started to get its due nationally in 2015.

Then, just as Straight Outta Compton was putting hip-hop on the forefront of the nation's collective conscious with its several-week run at the top of the box office, legendary Dallas producer/emcee The D.O.C. chose The Bomb Factory to make his big return — an event that was met with much pomp and circumstance. But when, as our own H. Drew Blackburn put it, “[we found out] that The D.O.C.'s voice wasn't really back, and the whole novelty of seeing the fallen star who had the career-that-could-have-been was better than the actual performance,” it was Bobby Sessions who came in and stole that show.

That happened because Sessions' new LP, Law of Attraction, wasn't just one of the best local releases of 2015, it was one of the year's best releases of the year, period. And perhaps the biggest standout track from this standout album was a minimal, laughter-filled joint called “Peyton Manning.”

Produced by -topic, the track pulls off the neat trick of really selling the illusion that you're right there next to Sessions while he's slurrily spitting bar after clever bar and, like in the song's official video, that you're just one member of a crowd of close friends audibly guffawing and high-fiving when he drops lyrical bombs like “Smartest rapper in the world? I gotta be. / The smartest kid in every class but I got a B.”

It's loose and endlessly fun in an informal way as Sessions invites you in to rap with you rather than at you.

But, really, one of the biggest markers for success of any hip-hop track is its ability to spawn new slang terms into popular lexicon. And the thing that really puts “Peyton Manning” over the top is how the Rappin' Captain has us referring to our own booze-filled cups as the Broncos' quarterback whenever they've got us feeling throwed.

There's just something about that witty little turn of phrase that sticks with you.

And stick it does, just like Manning's passes did in Marvin Harrison's mits back in the day, from the first time you ever hear it to the 5,000th.
