Regan James Gets Real at No. 8.

The North Texas music scene has really come into its own the past 12 months. There hasn't been a year in recent memory when so many local artists appeared on the Billboard charts, played Saturday Night Live and other late night television programs, or otherwise appeared in the national spotlight. Here, as we've done in years past, we're highlighting what we think are the 100 best songs locally-tied of the year. The thing is, as far as this list is concerned, we're judging the quality of the songs irrespective of the popularity of the people putting them out — meaning, you're just as likely to have a song by a Grammy-winning act sandwiched between a couple of high school bands. Hey, it's just more interesting that way. Also keeping with tradition, we'll be rolling out the list in smaller, more digestible portions every weekday through the end of the month, complete with embedded streams of each. We think that gives each of these more than deserving acts a little more shine, and it also gives you a little more time to really check out each of these high quality tunes — including, presumably, a few that you may have missed upon their initial release.

Thirteen years ago, Burleson native Kelly Clarkson was crowned the winner of the first season of American Idol. It was the first truly massive reality singing competition of its kind in America and, to this day, Clarkson probably still stands as that series' biggest success story.

Ever since, North Texans have pretty much been a staple on Idol and its many offshoots. That was certainly the case with 2014's seventh season of The Voice, which saw five North Texas singers make it past the program's “blind auditions” round. And that's where a great many of us were first introduced to then-15-year-old Reagan James, also of Burleson.

During her time on the show, James was complimented by Gwen Stefani for having what she called a “God-given gift” at singing — a gift, we should point out, that helped James crack the show's top 10 before her eventual exit.

All that's plenty cool, for sure. But it's what James did after coming back home that really caught our ear.

Back in March, James released her first post-The Voice single, a surprisingly soulful pop cut called “Blue.”

As well-delivered as the standout Nelly Furtado and Lorde covers she performed on The Voice were, “Blue” sees James finding her own vocal footing, putting a unique spin on '90s R&B without sounding like a retro or nostalgia act. The song features some of the same sensibilities that helped James really sell Blu Cantrell's “Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops!)” to move from the battle rounds of The Voice to the series' live shows as she continued to progress toward a sound all her own.

The song is an especially promising debut given that James was still just 16 when it came out. Hopefully, this means we'll only be hearing more and more from her in the coming years — especially in early 2016, when her debut album is finally released.

Until then, we'll just have to keep this first tune from one of DFW's most talented high schoolers on loop indefinitely.
