Sealion Cruises To No. 8 With Automobile.

Just as we have at the end of the last two years, the Central Track staff has once again spent the last week reminiscing and pouring pretty tirelessly over the best locally-tied songs of the year. By now, of course, most folks expect as much from their local culture publications. Unlike in previous years, though, we've decided to do things a little differently in 2014. For one, the influx of notable tunes this year prompted us to double the length of our list — from the Top 50 to the Top 100 local songs of the year. At the same time, we didn't want to overwhelm our readers with a huge list of 100 tracks to take in all once, either. To that end, we're going to roll the thing out in daily chunks, unveiling more songs every weekday through the end of the month. It should serve to make the thing a little easier to digest — and give you time to check out the embedded streams of anything you might have missed throughout the course of the year. Really, though, you should give each of these songs a spin. They all deserve at least that much.

Over the course of the past four years, Sealion's put out three different releases, each one featuring a different bassist.

And while each successive replacement member has wound up shaping the band's sound in noticeable ways, never has the band been so drastically impacted as it was when Samantha Villavert joined last year. Since then, she's not only added an extra dimension to the band's sound through her rock-steady backing vocals, but she even personally crafted songs such as “Automobile” for the band's July-released Heavy Fizz LP — tracks that stand out even alongside Sealion's best batch of material to date.

The song's signature riff is a simple one, but one that Sealion builds upon quite ably with layered guitars and drastic shifts in dynamics. It works just works impeccably well, keeping true to the band's skuzzy, surf-rooted garage rock sensibilities. And, on a dime, the laidback, '60s-leaning garage grooves under the verses are overtaken by big distorted, octave guitar stabs and back. This is a process that repeats until guitarist Hunter Moehring rips through one of the most memorable solo sections he's ever turned in. But, more than just one of the heavier moments on the record, it's indicative of how thoroughly well-arranged the song is on the whole.

The song's also just completely killer in a live setting, which is why the band's been kicking off most of its sets with “Automobile” since this summer. That's a bit of a gutsy move — the six-minute-plus “Automobile” is not only Sealion's best song, but also the longest in its catalog by far — but, without fail, “Automobile” feels like it speeds by at the band's shows in half that time. If anything, it feels too short.

But, more importantly, “Automobile” serves as the biggest sign that Villavert's now fully ingrained herself into the Sealion tribe — and that Sealion 3.0 is the band's strongest version yet.
