Lord Byron Talks His Way To No. 11 With Posh.

Just as we have at the end of the last two years, the Central Track staff has once again spent the last week reminiscing and pouring pretty tirelessly over the best locally-tied songs of the year. By now, of course, most folks expect as much from their local culture publications. Unlike in previous years, though, we've decided to do things a little differently in 2014. For one, the influx of notable tunes this year prompted us to double the length of our list — from the Top 50 to the Top 100 local songs of the year. At the same time, we didn't want to overwhelm our readers with a huge list of 100 tracks to take in all once, either. To that end, we're going to roll the thing out in daily chunks, unveiling more songs every weekday through the end of the month. It should serve to make the thing a little easier to digest — and give you time to check out the embedded streams of anything you might have missed throughout the course of the year. Really, though, you should give each of these songs a spin. They all deserve at least that much.

Since meeting him last summer, we've been fairly consistently floored by brash young Dallas rapper Lord Byron — but not as floored as the man born Byron Neal has been.

These days, the East Dallasite is, as it were, feeling himself. And when it comes to his newest material in particular, dude's been especially proud — something he'll tell anyone who'll listen.

Hey, if you don't believe in yourself, no one else will. Right? That's a saying. Of course, so is this: Pride comes before the fall.

So whither Byron on the spectrum? Well, he's delaying the fall for now — and comfortably at that. The rapper didn't release an album in 2014, no. But he did unveil a handful of singles that further maintained his place as one of the top rappers in town — if not the top international emcee that he imagines himself as being — including “Posh”, which he dropped online on November 14 and is now selling for $10 per download.

Over a Sam Crooke-produced beat that chews up elements of eight-bit, trap and electronic as it unfolds along its path, Byron not only flashes an impeccable taste for aesthetics here but also spits with a purpose that at least somewhat justifies his over-the-top cocky persona. His is a bombastic, head-spinning lyrical tornado that's dropped atop an endlessly compelling piece of production. More impressively, these words and sounds work hand-in-hand; words and sounds that start out aggressively end rather peacefully at the end of the track, as if a resolution — or perhaps a realization — has come to pass over the course of the song's two-seconds-shy-of-four-minutes run.

Whether it's that Byron “runs the South,” as he proclaims repeatedly throughout “Posh,” remains ever up in the air. Same goes for his belief that he's “the most important black man in Hip Hop culture at the moment.”

But, either way, you've got to respect the hustle. And we do.

Because, sure, Byron's cocky. But that doesn't mean we should take for granted the fact that he's also one of the more compelling emcees around.
