Celebrate National Tequila Day Like a Boss.
Welcome to The Spread, our weekly feature that aims to share all the area restaurant, food and beverage industry news that’s fit to print. Except that this is the Internet, so space isn't a concern. Also: Good thing, because this is Dallas and this town always has breaking restaurant news going down like whoa.
Happy National Tequila Day, folks! As if we really needed to give you reason to throw back a few shots of the delicious nectars of the agave plant.
Still, with several local restaurants joining in on the celebration, it's hard not to indulge.
Urban Taco is busting out over 40 different types of hand-selected tequila for tastings from 7 to 9 p.m. at their Uptown spot. In addition to tequila flights complete with house made sangrita, plus your choice of tequila infused with pineapple habanero, strawberry kiwi or ginger lemongrass, the upscale taco joint will also have several margaritas on special. These include their famous Hibiscus Margarita, Acapulquena, Margarita and their delicious Ginger Jalapeno Margarita.
The folks over at El Fenix will celebrate this national holiday with $3.50 award-winning margaritas all day and $2 Jose Cuervo floaters. Meso Maya, on the other hand, will keep the celebrations moving right along with drinks specials all day and rumors of a special guest showing up. If their Facebook page is any indication, our best guess is a former football super star — or at least a football signed by one. Velvet Taco, meanwhile, celebrates with $2 margaritas all day, and we highly suggest trying out their Mexican street style corn in a cup. And, in keeping up with the competition, new McKinney Avenue spot Pozo Mercado will be offering $3 tacos, queso, guac and margaritas all day long.
For the more experienced margarita drinker, why not add in an entire bottle of beer into the mix? Because screw it, let's celebrate in style. The massively popular and continually expanding Fuzzy's Taco Shop, which recently opened its new Deep Ellum location's doors, offers up what they call a Bulldog, which is basically just a bottle of your favorite Mexican beer shoved into a frozen margarita.
On the topic of Mexican cuisine, news broke this week that famous Dallas restaurateur and chef Genaro Silva will make his triumphant return later this summer with a new spot in East Dallas. The Mockingbird Lane restaurant, aptly titled Genaro's, will focus on Latin-based cuisine and will feature some of his popular Tex-Mex and authentic Mexican plates, which launched him into the culinary spotlight in the '80s and '90s in the first place.
Speaking of new spots opening up in town: Boxwood Tap and Grill is officially open for business taking over the old Thomas Avenue Beverage Company's location, which closed s few months back; and, over in Deep Ellum, a new neighborhood grocery store called Deep Ellum Postal & Grocer will set up shop on Main Street in a renovated vintage shop..
On a completely different note, local barbecue favorite Pecan Lodge just added a new smoker to their lineup that will be named Rick as an homage to the owner's father. The massive smoker will do its best to help feed the hungry masses, however we can only assume this will encourage only more barbecue fanatics to show up to the already insanely in-demand spot.
In beer news, Deep Ellum Brewing Company will be celebrating the one-year anniversary of their Dallas Blonde launch with a huge party. Celebrations will kick off on August 2 over at Katy Trail Ice House, which hosted the initial launch where over 1,000 pints we sold. DEBC will have a limited number of collector goblets, Dallas Blonde pins and tons of free swag to give away. Hit up their Facebook page to keep updated on the event.
