Rio Room's Massive Weekend Kicks Off Tonight With Flight Facilities.
Rio Room's having the best week ever, you guys.
And, better yet, this sucker won't come to an end until the early dawn hours of Sunday morning. That's when their self-described “Big Week,” which features a three-night series headlined by some of the best DJs in the world, finally ends and when this here party girl will start to nurse what is likely to be one of the worst hangovers of 2012.
The “Big Week” has been planned in conjunction with a number of Dallas cultural events — the Dallas International Film Festival, the Dallas Art Fair and DMA Art Ball — and, though it's actually only three days long, it kicks off tonight with Australian duo Flight Facilities on the decks.
Their name may not ring a bell, but I promise you've heard them before. Perhaps while their famous “Crave You” was playing at a swanky bar? Perhaps.
But there's more to these dudes than just that. They also released my favorite song of last year, “Foreign Language,” and that track's music video is so '80s suave it makes even Miami Vice look trashy. Their set tonight will even feature a live performance by singer Jess. So wear your whitest suit, darkest shades and expect to show up late to work Friday.
Friday night, meanwhile, features a performance by renowned Belgian DJ Aeroplane, who will be making his first appearance in Texas. Though billed as nu-disco, his influences span from deep house to classic soul to some seriously poppy shit. So expect a varied mix during his set.
Be warned, though: He's somewhat notorious for being a diva of the DJ circuit. But, in my book, it's OK to make some irrational demands if you're that fucking good at what you do. And, besides, diva or not, this guy is it. For this party, wear your tightest pants or your Frenchest dress — and make sure that coif of yours is perfect, as Aeroplane is sure to bring pure European class.
On Saturday, the next and last night of the “Big Week,” Rio Room will play host to the official DMA Art Ball after-party.
This night will have a somewhat different vibe — mostly because, unlike Thursday and Friday nights, it isn't free to attend. Quite the opposite. Tickets to get in start at a steep $125, which better mean open bar, seeing as Hennessy is a sponsor.
Here's the big thing, though: If you're an Erykah Badu fan, you'll definitely be getting your money's worth, as the night will feature a live performance by Badu and her Cannabinoids.
What should you wear to this one? Oh, just whatever you were wearing to the Ball. That or whatever skimpy sparkly outfit you decided to crash the party in.
Godspeed, party people.
