Watch Your Color Choices This Summer.

When the temperatures rise above 100, the last thing you want to think about is covering your face up with a bunch of makeup. But, hey, a little makeup is still OK, says makeup artist Shane Monden, who we hit up to give us some help on the upcoming beauty trends for this summer.

First of all, Monden says, pinks are your friends: “I like a bright color in the summer,” he says. “You can use it sparingly, but it can give you great impact.”

Cream blushes like MAC's Madley Magenta or MAC's Virgin Isle are great tones where a little will go a long way, he says. He's right: Nobody likes a lot of powder or face makeup in the greasy summer. But what about eyeliners, which can get pretty greasy in the heat? Monden points us toward the world of gel liners. The good thing about them, he says, is they're waterproof, so they wont come off in the pool. Better yet, they come in all different shades, and you can change it up all you want.

Since you will definitely be hanging around the pool at some point over the summer, Monden suggests trying a blue shade. You can do anything from a deep navy blue to a pastel — and if you're not bold enough to go with blue, there's always a deep berry tone. Oranges are super hot this summer, too, he says. It's a great daytime accent and helps spice up your evening look. Metallics are great right now, too, both as liners or highlighters.

“I like to add a bit of metallic into blush to give a bit of a sheen to your cheek,” Monden suggests, adding that a little shimmer on your face can highlight your bone structure make your face really glow.

Last but not least, Monden offers up yellow — the great neutral of this season in his mind. He suggests trying it as a liner or a shadow and then adding some sparkle for the evening: “I love using the yellow Smashbox cream liner and a yellow pigment over it to make it pop.”

Sound good? Well, with some help from photographer Sam Granado and our model, Abby, Mondem decided to help us really show off what he means. Check out each photo's caption for details on the products used.
