Chelsey Danielle – “Be Yourself.”
RIYL: The future, Conan?
What else you should know: Realize it or not, this is Denton synth player Chelsey Danielle’s third appearance in this column in the past four months. Prior to today, she also had a video premiere with her popular punk outfit Pearl Earl, and a a second one premiere her experimental space trio Helium Queens.
This time, she gets the spotlight all to herself with the release of her first-ever solo EP this past week. She’s the second Pearl Earl member to do so in recent weeks, as the band’s drummer, Bailey K Chapman also released a real solid post-punk effort with her new duo Heavy Pulp.
Danielle’s full EP — which you can stream here — kicks off with the track below, setting the tone for the idiosyncratic batch of R&B to follow. It opens with a synth bass groove that lays groundwork for her soulful voice and off-kilter keys and vocal harmonies.
It maintains the dreamy touch fans of her many other projects will readily recognize, distilled this time through a non-conformist, futuristic brand of R&B they may or not be ready for.
