Dallas Singer Tiger Darrow Mocks Hipster Disney Princesses, Goes Viral.
Dallas singer Tiger Darrow's been on the up-and-up in the local scene for a while now, which might seem like kind of a crazy thing to say since she's all of 19 years old. Except that, well, it's not.
Young or not, Darrow — since the very first time I met her a couple years back now — has always come off as an extremely ambitious type. Her IMDB profile confirms that much; it's bolstered by a friendship with director Robert Rodriguez, who's cast Darrow in his Spy Kids films and asked her to pen music for some of those films as well as for Machete. Also indicative of her ambition: The fact that, before she headed off to New York University to study music theory and composition, she released her very first two full-length albums within the span of a couple of months last year.
So it should come as little surprise that Darrow's latest feat again comes across as an ambitious one — and one that also appears to be living up to its large aspirations so far.
In a video produced by YouTube comedy collective AVbyte, Darrow and three other New York-based singers tackle the ever-present hipster Disney princess meme in full costumed musical form on the streets of Manhattan.
The clip, which has amassed 1.5 million views since being posted on October 1, is kind of funny and charming in that suburban-mom-who-just-discovered-what-a-hipster-is kind of way. But Darrow, rather unsurprisingly especially shines in the effort, very much coming across as the talented, alluring vocalist that she's been trending toward becoming for some time now.
To see what we mean, check out the clip, in which Darrow stars as Hipster Snow White, at the end of this post.
Before that, though, check out another example of Darrow nicely coming into her own these days. Last week, she posted a new, nu disco-indebted demo to her SoundCloud page called “Die Young.” The song, produced by Adam Pickrell, former co-host of the once-ridiculously popular weekly Cool Out parties, teases an upcoming collaborative effort between the two, Pickrell says. It's a solid effort, and, in it, Darrow also flashes her increasingly impressive vibey vocal abilities. Give it a listen here.
Pretty nice, right? Although Pickrell says there's no real timetable for that release, here's looking forward to that effort, for sure.
In the meantime, I guess her contributions to hipster meme culture will have to do.
