Scenes From Last Night's Bad News Boys Show At Dada.
Together or apart, King Khan and Mark “BBQ” Sultan have played in town numerous times over the last decade, which has given us plenty of time to notice just how much change they've undergone during that time and ample opportunity to ponder what it all means.
For instance, when the duo played the Granada this time last year, we noted how, as the audience and venue sizes they play these days continues to grow, its naked crowd surfing and pissing into each other's mouth ways has all but tapered off.
“Which is probably for the best,” we wrote back then. “You can only pull off that kind of shtick for so long before it begins to lose any sentiment of spontaneity and starts to feel like a boring, forced charade. It's a fine line, to be sure. Or maybe something just seems to happen to people when they hit their mid-30s and start getting married and having kids like King Khan and BBQ have. Once that happens, peeing on one's bandmates is suddenly far more pathetic than cute.”
And while its blend of '50s doo-wop, straight-ahead punk and psych rock still stands on its own, one wonders if the band's time has passed. Maybe it is because the duo's current calmed-down state doesn't seem to live up to its early legend? At the same time, that's probably not something anybody necessarily wants either.
Maybe, then, there's some confusion over the band's (still in the works?) attempt to change its name to Bad News Boys? Or the fact that throwback garage rock isn't what the kids are into right now?
Who knows.
All we can say definitively is that the guys headlined a Dada show last night along with Milk Lines and Sailor Poon. And, from the looks of Karlo X. Ramos' photo set, it didn't appear to have been all that full.
