Scenes From Chvrches' Dallas Debut Last Night at The Granada Theater.
From the raucous reception Chvrches frontwoman Lauren Mayberry and her bandmates Iain Cook and Martin Doherty received taking the stage, to the rapturous applause the crowd showered them with after each song and even the vociferous booing of Mayberry's announcement that the band was almost done for the evening, it was abundantly clear all night: Thursday's sell-out crowd at the Granada was going to eat absolutely everything that Chvrches fed them. They were going to enjoy it and beg for more. All Chvrches had to do was show up.
Since, well, they did, that in and of itself seemed to be enough for most of this crowd.
This, of course, is not to say that Mayberry and company mailed it in. They didn't. The band's first-ever Dallas performance boasted some terrific highlights, including a standout performance of “Now Is Not The Time” from the group's debut Recover EP, as well as an excellent cover of Prince's “I Would Die 4 U.”
It's just, a sole EP and a handful of singles into their blossoming career, Chvrches doesn't have that much material. And there were times in which this showed — particularly during the middle third of the band's 60-minute set.
Just as things began to look pretty bleak though, the band was able to break out “Recover.” get a large chunk of the crowd dancing — plus an even larger chunk singing along — and get the show back on track.
On their best songs, such as “Now Is Not The Time,” “Recover” or the newly released “Gun,” the band — and especially Mayberry — is a sight to behold, full of nervous energy, shimmering vocals, illuminated to an almost stereoscopic effect by some particularly interesting stage lighting.
It's just that, right now, in order to headline, they have to play seemingly everything they know. As they build their catalog, it seems inevitable that Chvrches' live show will improve. The highs will still be there. And the lows, hopefully, won't be quite as painful.
All in all, Chvrches Dallas debut was a lot like a first date: There was a ton of excitement beforehand, some fantastic stuff during the course of the evening, and a few personality quirks that weren't so fun. But things might improve with time.
It certainly wasn't perfect. But anyone in last night's audience would be crazy not to want to see Chvrches again.
