Checking In With Vickery Park Barkeep Josh Robinson
Josh Robinson can be found at Vickery Park almost any time of the week. Which is a good thing for the spot's regulars, as Robinson is the epitome of a gentle giant — until, that is, someone gives him attitude.
But there's a way around that, of course. Just recite your orders clearly and audibly — and, as always, be courteous — and he'll be your new best friend. And that's what everyone wants out of their favorite bartender, right?
Name: Josh Robinson.
Nickname: Big Josh.
How long have you been at Vickery Park? 6 years.
How long have you been bartending? Since 2000.
First gig? A nightclub in Deep Ellum called The Wall.
How were you trained (if you had formal training) and where?
I learned just by watching and working with some of the best bartenders in Dallas.
How many bars have you bartended at?
I've had regular shifts at seven different places over the years, and have moonlighted at more places than I can count.
Where was the most interesting place (or bar) you bartended?
It's a tie between the Gypsy Tea Room and the Red Jacket.
What is your shot of choice?
Chilled Stoli.
Cocktails, drinks, beer, wine, or all of the above?
Good beer, cold Stoli, and the occasional whiskey. Wine's nice with a good meal.
What do you find most intriguing about the Dallas bar scene?
The fact that going in to work on any given night, you never know what you'll see.
What is the most valuable bartending tip you've learned?
Treat people the way that you'd like to be treated.
Other than being called by the wrong name, what can customers do to really grind your gears?
Scream orders at me when I'm not looking at them.
Other than Vickery Park, what is your go-to bar when you need to decompress?
I typically split time between Goodfriend, Meridian Room, and Anvil Pub.
