Our First Westlake Brewing Try Is An American IPA And While It’s Approachable With Some Interesting Flavors, It’s A Little Shy.

Overview

New-to-On Tap breweries two weeks in a row? What?

Listen, one of my big goals for this column in 2022 is to hit a more diverse group of breweries. As I seem to explain on a regular basis, lots of factors go into what beer from which breweries make it to my glass to review but the biggest one is availability. There is a lot of beer from hard working brewers out there just begging me to say something about it but a lot of it requires a trip to the brewery to get which isn’t always easy.

Imagine my delight when I walked into the cooler at Lone Star Beverages in Carrollton to find that not one, not two, but three of the breweries at the top of my list for review had beer on the shelf for the first time. (And yes, that means that next week I’ll be moving another name from the “not yet” list to the “reviewed” list.) This is also great news for the DFW beer scene because more breweries with shelf space for their product is never a bad thing.

This week I’m hitting Westlake Brewing Company, yet another brewery that started planning for life before the pandemic and opened in September of last year in Deep Ellum.

Background on American IPA

What can I say about American IPA that hasn’t already been said in this column? Honestly, probably not a lot. A quick look at the master list (yes, there is one. Thank you, Ben Smithson!) indicates that American IPA is the single most reviewed style here at On Tap. Not really hard to figure out why either. In the bygone days before hazies, fruited sours, and pastry stouts, it was the single most brewed and consumed style in the craft beer community.

Appearance

Y’All-Star has that classic American IPA orange-gold color with a frothy, full off-white head. It is medium clear with just a touch of haze indicating that it is likely unfiltered. The foam stand, while pretty and impressive on the pour, shows below expected persistence and is gone all too soon.

Aroma

The nose on Y’All-Star is restrained, verging on shy for an American IPA. There is the expected grapefruit, pine, and resin for sure but they all feel like they are hanging back, sort of like a gang of wannabe school yard toughs without a leader to get the fight started. It also carries a pleasant grainy sweetness around the edges that offers something of a preview to a softer side.

Flavor

Y’all-Star is full flavored for sure but muted, like someone turned the volume down. If you have ever listened to a rock concert from the venue parking lot you get the idea. There is grapefruit up front with pine and resin on the finish and all of that is wrapped up by a light sweetness that serves to soften up the bitterness.

Mouthfeel

Medium bodied with a mostly smooth texture, Y’all-Star is back to being classic for the style. The medium carbonation offers just a light, clean edge without detracting. There is no hint of alcohol warming even with the slightly above style ABV.

Overall Impression

This is the most English American IPA I’ve ever had and I mean that in a good way. I like it. Like, a lot! However, the score below is not really going to reflect that because I grade against the style guidelines rather than personal preference.

And when I say English, I mean in terms of the restraint and quality, not the aromas and flavors. Those things are pure American and absolutely lovely.

Y’All-Star IPA is amazingly approachable and easy drinking. Not many beers in the American IPA category are what I’d call “all-day” beers. Usually, it’s the bitterness that does you in but Westlake has managed to give this beer the big IBUs (65 in a style that tops out at 70) without creating a beer that induces bitter beer face.

The style calls for more aggressive hop aromas and flavor, more pronounced bitterness, and a much more persistent head but I love what Westlake has done with it and will be coming back to it this summer if it’s still around.

Score

On a scale of 1 to 10, I give Westlake Brewing Company Y’All Star IPA a 7.
