There Are Far Too Few English Mild Ales Made In North Texas. Props To Arlington’s Division Brewing For Nailing The Style With Its Distant Cousin.

The goal here is to look at these area beers without our local goggles on and to wonder aloud, “Is this beer good or do I just like it because it’s local?” Should be a fun exercise, no? This week, we sipped on Division Brewing’s Distant Cousin.

Overview.
I like finding a beer I haven’t seen before. Sometimes when the big box store’s once and seemingly-endless variety of beers starts to look the same, I reach back out to a local watering hold to see what’s on tap that I might not have seen before. That’s how I came to score a crowler of Distant Cousin at Craft Beer Cellar in Lakewood; it’s almost as good as having a real bar sit down. Division Brewing hails from Arlington, and it has been on the scene since late 2015. I haven’t seen Division’s beers very much around town. And it’s likely due to the brewery’s limited distribution. But hey, that’s OK! Ain’t nothing wrong with a smaller local option. I have yet to visit Division Brewing, have you?
Background on English Mild Ale.
The English Mild Ale style is one of those classic styles that gets overlooked much of the time. There are so many other flashier, hoppier, more brash styles out there to wreck palates, after all. People like new stuff, and breweries have to ride that wave of shifting customer preference, fad or no fad. I will say that of craft styles, the humble English Mild Ale is underrepresented in North Texas. So props to Division right off the bat for giving North Texas craft drinkers the opportunity to try a style that may not be available in too many places. For a primer on the English Mild Ale style, check out our review on Pegasus City’s Highpoint Porch Ale.The English Mild Ale is a low-alcohol, dark beer that can be enjoyed in multiples. It should taste refreshing, yet malt-forward and flavorful. It can finish either on the dryer side or on the sweeter side; darker versions can have a more roasty finish compared to the mahogany or lighter variations. Head retention is known to be meh on this style, as with a lower-than-everyday level of carbonation, so it’s not going to drink bright and snappy like a more highly-carbonated type of beer.
Appearance.
Distant Cousin pours a deep brown color into the glass. The edges of the glass allow light to pass through, and I see a porter-like color on this beer. If I weren’t primed by knowing ahead of time that this is an English Dark Mild, I’d venture a guess at this beer and probably peg it as a lowly-carbed brown ale or porter. I wasn’t expecting a huge amount of foam here, and it’s spot on for the style. As I begin sipping the beer, the foam fades into a scant ring around the inside of the glass.
Aroma.
Distant Cousin has a very nice malt character on the nose. In fact, malt and roast are pretty much the only two aromas going on here for me. And that’s fine, because that’s what is supposed to be going on here with the style. At first I get a round sweet aroma from the malt. Then behind that, I sense some faint chocolate notes and a little bit of roasty punch from the darker, more highly-kilned malts.
Flavor.
The sweetness I perceive on the sniff takes a back seat on the flavor. For me, the sip starts with a bit of roasty grain and a small amount of bitter dark chocolate. On the swallow, I sense a small amount of sweetness. All in all, though, the flavors here and nuanced and subtle. Nothing in Distant Cousin jumps right out at me or dominates the flavor profile, and I think that’s a great thing.
Mouthfeel.
Distant Cousin has a low-key British pub ale carbonation profile. There’s just a touch of carbonation here, and it quickly fades after the swallow. The beer finishes thin, and it’s one of those change-up sensory experiences. Most people see a dark beer and think that it’s going to be a thick, hearty drinking experience. But not so with Distant Cousin. It’s bright, smooth and imminently refreshing.
Overall Impression.
I can understand why the English Mild Ale may not attract the modern craft beer drinker like some of those other flashier styles out there. But that doesn’t mean that Division Brewing should stop brewing Distant Cousin. I think this beer is a success. It’s refreshing, easy to drink and it plays well even in this August Dallas heat. I do understand the guidelines for this style state that ABV range is from 3-4 percent. So what we have here isn’t really ever going to be a medium- or full-bodied drinking experience. However, I’m left wanting just a tad more body on this beer. Maybe it could be mashed higher, or put a touch more Dextrine type malt in the grain bill? Regardless, I keep reaching for more and this beer doesn’t disappoint. And now that I’m two beers in, I really want to brew this style for my next brewing session at home.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I’d give Division Brewing Company Distant Cousin a 8.
