This Aromatic, Tropical And Assertive New England IPA, While Definitely Enjoyable, Ranks Middle-Of-The-Road Compared To Its Peers.

This week I sipped on Topwater Buzz by Celestial Beerworks.

Overview

Celestial Beerworks opened in the Medical District of Dallas in October of 2018 and it’s been a space race ever since. While Celestial brews different styles of beer, its tastes run unapologetically to the hops side of things. A quick look at the current brewery menu on Untappd confirms this as 9 of the 13 listed options are serious IPAs and most of those of New England (Hazy) variety.

The brewery taproom itself is still the best place to try Celestial’s offerings so it was a bit of a pleasant surprise to trip over three different offerings while cruising the beer cooler at Lone Star Beverages a couple weeks ago. I’m still not seeing Celestial’s beer at mainstream package places like Total Wine or Spec’s but it seems you shouldn’t be surprised if you see a 4-pack or 3 from them at smaller, locally owned places specializing in beer.

Background on New England IPA

If you want some great background on New England IPA, sometimes called Hazy or Juicy IPA, check out our reviews of TUPPS DDH IPA Series 16 and Turning Point Silent Treatment, the later of which presents itself to be a zero IBU IPA just like today’s offering.

Rather than talking more about the background of the style here, I want to discuss the zero IBU thing a bit because it’s complicated and to many casual beer drinkers I think it might be a bit misleading. International Bitterness Units, or IBUs for short, is the measurement of isohumulones in beer. Isohumulones are generated from alpha acids in hops during the boil portion of the brewing process. Long story short, if the hops aren’t included in the boil there should be no isohumulones and therefore no measurable IBUs.

This doesn’t mean there isn’t any bitterness though, hence the misleading part in my mind. Modern craft culture has hung a lot of marketing on the IBU number without doing a lot of explaining. In short, bitterness can be expressed in three ways — Perceived Bitterness, which is simply what can be tasted in beer; Calculated Bitterness, which is a mathematical formula to determine bitterness in a recipe; and Measured Bitterness, which is derived from testing the finished product and expressed in IBUs.

Marketing – just because it isn’t a lie doesn’t mean it’s the whole truth either.

Appearance

Visibly, Topwater Buzz couldn’t be mistaken for anything in the beer world other than a New England IPA. It pours a flat gold-orange color that under the right light has beige tones. The foam stand is off-white and builds impressively early on but it lacks staying power and is soon gone.

Aroma

Again, Topwater Buzz delivers the goods. The aroma is assertive and bold, full of pineapple, peach, and some nectarine for me. It’s bright and entertaining, begging for your attention more than a high school class clown.

Flavor

Topwater Buzz is mostly a tropical party on your tongue. Highlighted by mango, pineapple, and orange, this beer is a low ABV fruity cocktail nearly deserving of its own little umbrella garnish. There is a piney/resinous note on the finish that I find a little distracting and even discordant as the beer warms. There is a mild astringency throughout that is pushing harsh for me.

Mouthfeel

Topwater Buzz has a medium body with medium carbonation. There is no real alcohol warmth to this and — except for the astringency noted above — it’s smooth.

Overall Impression

I mostly enjoyed Topwater Buzz but it feels middle-of-the-road in the hazy world to me.

While I really enjoyed the amazing tropical aroma and the big fruit flavors, the edginess was something of a buzzkill and the finish struck a definite blue note with the unexpected pop of pine and resin. Throw in the fact that beer came in around $20 for a 4-pack of 16 oz cans and it leaves me a little flat.

Like most New England IPAs in the Metroplex, I think it is suffering from constant experimentation rather than careful development with an eye to reproducibility.

Don’t read this wrong either. I’ll be happily finishing the 4-pack I have and Celestial is still very high on my list of local taprooms to visit soon.

Score

On a scale of 1 to 10, I give Celestial Beerworks Topwater Buzz a 6.5.
