There’s Nothing Wrong With Cedar Creek Brewery’s Gone A-Rye, a Big, Bitter, Boozy Beer That’s Been Putting Seven Points, Texas on the Map For Years.

Welcome to On Tap! Each week in this recurring feature, we’ll take an in-depth look at one of the many beers now available in the suddenly crowded North Texas brew scene. The goal here is to look at these area beers without our local goggles on and to wonder aloud, “Is this beer good or do I just like it because it’s local?” Should be a fun experiment, no? This week, we sipped on Cedar Creek Brewery’s Gone A-Rye.

Overview.
On a recent weekend trip to Cedar Creek Lake, I stopped by Cedar Creek Brewery because, well, why not? As a brewery and craft beer fan, it felt almost sinful to not make a pit stop at what is likely the most hip thing going on in the little town of Seven Points, Texas. With the family in tow, we made it a late lunch outing and we were pleasantly surprised. Not only is the beer on point, but the Plowboys Cafe — conveniently right there in the taproom – cranked out some excellent food, too. But back to the beer. One highlight in particular was my first beer, BlackMan Brew’s MVP Saison, available on draft. Cedar Creek also had an American wild ale available called Catastrophic Failure that played very much out of step with what I have grown to expect from this brewery, and in a good way. We also tried Oat N About, an easy-drinking oatmeal stout. The waitstaff was super-friendly, and even hooked our baby up with some ice cream. At the risk of sounding any more like a total ass-kisser, I’ll stop after this next sentence. I really dig the vibe at Cedar Creek Brewery: it’s laid-back, the people are friendly and not pretentious, and the beer is solid. Gone A-Rye isn’t a new cast member in Cedar Creek’s lineup by any means. In fact, it was first brewed in something like 2014, so it’s practically a veteran in the North Texas craft beer scene.

Background on Double IPA.
The Double IPA style is all about cranked hops and a supporting malt backbone that can up the alcohol and body to keep pace with the bitter and aromatic onslaught. According the the BJCP style guidelines, the Double IPA should be an intensely hoppy pale ale without the big, rich maltiness and body of an American Barleywine. So don’t expect to have to nurse a beer in this style like you might something that’s bigger on the body.

Appearance.
Gone A-Rye – in this current form I bought at the brewery – is packaged into a Dankosaurus can, and labeled with a catch-all white label that the brewery can use for any of its beers and just check the appropriate box. This catch-all label is a little bit genius and a little bit lazy but, hey, that’s how Cedar Creek rolls I guess. In its more normal packaged format, this beer is available in pint cans. I think that seeing this beer in pint-can form gave me pause, and I never quite mustered the courage to dive in. Nevertheless, the beer pours foamy and bright into my glass, with ample head that sticks around for about 20 minutes. After the foam subsides, I see a webby lattice of foam hang around as I work my way through the pour.

Aroma.
This beer is without a doubt a Double IPA, evident from the first sniff. I get a wallop of dank citrus peel and pitch first, and then a sharp evergreen scent next. Then the aggressive hop aroma begins to fade and a fruity orange scent emerges. The hop aroma complexity is very evident here, and it’s quite enjoyable. Somewhere amongst the hop aroma I get a small amount of that classic spicy rye aroma. It’s not over-done here, and I appreciate that fact. Malt is here, but it’s subtle.

Flavor.
The hop bitterness is firmly in charge from a flavor standpoint. This beer walks the line between overly-bitter and just right. Regardless where that threshold may be for you, the bitterness remains pronounced and lingers for a very long time on this beer. I can feel it on my tongue all the way through to the next sip. Behind the bitterness, I sense some fruit, and just when the fruit hits, here comes the rye. It’s a nice spicy addition on this beer, and in just the right amount for me. Some rye-added beers can get too showy with the rye addition, but with all of the hop complexity here, it’s just the right amount. This is a boozy beer, no doubt, but I refrain from calling this a boozy beer up front because the alcohol notes really hang back behind the other flavors.

Mouthfeel.
Carbonation is medium on Gone A-Rye. Its medium body seems a bit thin at first, but I think it’s the hops playing tricks on my brain. After the hop situation subsides, I can feel the malt take over and I’m once again reminded that this beer does play within the lines in the mouthfeel department.

Overall Impression.
At first, I wasn’t super-psyched about diving in to a rye beer. But after enjoying one at the taproom, I brought home some and I’m really digging it. The rye addition in Gone A-Rye plays nicely with the dominant hop bitterness and aroma. The hop aroma and bitterness also remains cranked through the pour, and even though this brew borders on helmet beer territory, I find myself reaching for another round. Cheers!
