This Dallas Couple Just Set A New Bar For Adorable Marriage Proposals.
DeAndre Upshaw’s a pretty remarkable dude. During the day, the Dallas resident works as a digital marketing strategist and, at night, he doubles as a civil rights activist and one of the many affable screening hosts at the Alamo Drafthouse movie theaters.
In addition to keeping busy, the guy also has a clear flair for the dramatic. Case in point? The video for his very epic and quite-justifiably-going-viral surprise marriage proposal to Stuart Hausmann, his boyfriend of six years.
Set to Tegan & Sara’s “Closer,” the proposal features some 50 friends and family, members of the Danielle Georgiou Dance Group (Georgiou also choreographed the dancing, sending video of the routine around to Upshaw and Hausmann’s many out-of-town friends who came in to participate in the ), some marching band uniforms purchased in bulk on Craigslist, choir robes bought from eBay, confetti cannons and just about as much unadulterated joy as you can fit into a six-minute-and-48-second video.
It’s no wonder Hausmann said yes.
Anyway, check out the video for yourself and try not to smile as you do. (Spoiler: You can’t!)
Per Upshaw, that’s been a nice perk of this clip as it’s started to go viral and earn press from the Dallas Morning News, Queerty, Revelist and Gay Star News.
“The response from people who are still getting used to the idea of gay marriage has been great,” he tells Central Track.
It’s pretty crazy to think that, just 12 months ago, Haussman and Upshaw — despite their clear affection for one another — wouldn’t have been able to legally wed in this state. What a difference a year can make.
Love wins, indeed.
