Scenes From Last Night's Eels and Nicole Atkins Show at the Granada Theater.
Sometimes, you gotta feel for the Granada Theater staff. Night after night, the ushers try, hard as they can, to keep the crowds within the venue's designated standing areas. And yet, time and time again, their pleas must be repeated as the crowds spill over into the walkways the staff aims to keep clear.
To be sure, it was one of those nights at the Granada last night, as Eels came to town, touring on their just-released tenth album, Wonderful, Glorious, with support from singer-songwriter Nicole Atkins.
And their crowd — massive Eels fans all around, and pretty clearly — wasn't to be contained. Yeah, their elation was palpable: At the set's start, as Mark Oliver Everett's band came out, one by one and all dressed in Adidas tracksuits and sunglasses, the crowd went nuts; when Everett himself arrived on stage and hugged each of his fellow players, the crowd went nuts; whenever the band launched into a new song in the set, the crowd went nuts.
The reaction wasn't undeserved. The band's set was an impressive one, as Everett led his band through songs from throughout the band's lengthy time in the spotlight.
Earlier in the night, Atkins similarly shined, sharing both her amazing voice and fun stories behind each of her songs.
A fun night? No doubt.
