Hypnotic Donuts just opened up a month ago in a storefront just north of the Botanic Gardens. The new space is great; there's ample seating to enjoy your locally sourced coffee and breakfast here.
But, more than that, Hypnotic just takes doughnut crafting to another level entirely. This isn't your average doughnut storefront in a generic strip mall — even though, yes, that's what it may appear to be from the outside looking in. Hypnotic's true strength is in the quality of their doughnut bases: Their cake donut is moist and dense, with the perfect crumble; their yeast donuts are light and airy with just the right amount of stretch. Working off of that sturdy base, Hypnotic offers your standard doughnut fare (for just a buck) from glazed to chocolate cake and jelly filled. But if you want something a little bit outside the norm, they have that covered in spades with their specialty doughnuts (anywhere between $1 and $4), too. And that's where this place truly scores.
Try the Evil Elvis topped with bacon, honey and bananas, or maybe the Canadian Health Care option, which features a long john topped with maple frosting, bacon and maple syrup. For something really different, go for The Hangover. It's a plain cake doughnut with vanilla frosting and a dusting of gatorade powder. It sounds completely weird, but, we assure you, it is totally delicious. If that's still not crazy enough for you, try The Mexico, which comes with jalapenos and tabasco on vanilla frosting.
In addition to doughnuts, there are also biscuits and gravy of varying types to try, as well as some healthier breakfast options. Don't forget to get some of that Oak Cliff Coffee Roasters coffee to go with your meal while here, too. You'll need it since Hypnotic is only open till 12 or 1 depending on their supply each day. Point being? You'll want to get there early before all your favorites run out.
