Patrick Stewart Pays Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings a Remarkable Compliment.
May was a big month in the world of Star Trek — y'know, what with the theatrical release of Into Darkness, and all — so it's no surprise then that Patrick Stewart, one of that adored franchise's most iconic figures, made an appearance at Houston's Comicpalooza affair last weekend.
What is somewhat surprising, however, is what transpired once Stewart opened up the floor to questions from his fans at the convention.
When asked about his proudest accomplishments outside of his acting career, Stewart launched into an impassioned speech about bout the ways in which domestic violence has affected his personal life and the amount of work he's done to try to prevent the issue. It was a moving speech — not just because of Stewart's own fervor, but because of the way in which his answer so clearly touched the young woman that asked the question.
Also notable about Stewart's nearly eight-minute anti-abuse plea, which you can watch below in full, is the shout-out he gives to Dallas mayor and noted anti-domestic violence advocate Mike Rawlings at around the 6:30 mark: “He's a remarkable individual,” Stewart says of Rawlings.
Considering the source — this is Captain Jean-Luc Picard we're talking about — that's really saying something.
