SNL-Packed Football Comedy From Fort Worth Filmmaker Earns Distribution, Will Hit Theaters June 19.
In 2009, Seann William Scott starred in a forgettable sports comedy called Balls Out: Gary the Tennis Coach. Later this month, another sports comedy called Balls Out — wholly unrelated to that other one because this one focuses on intramural college football — will also earn its release. And, good news, everyone! This one, originally called Intramural until some studio exec decided that no one out there could possibly remember that Stifler dud, at least looks somewhat watchable!
If nothing else, it's got a fun cast: Balls Out features no fewer than three Saturday Night Live players — Beck Bennett, Kate McKinnon and Jay Pharaoh — alongside such familiar faces as Jake Lacy (Obvious Child! The Office!), Nick Kocher (College Humor! I Just Want My Pants Back!), Nikki Reed (Twilight! The O.C.! Thirteen!) and comedian D.C. Pierson. Also, Clint Howard and the guy who played Colonel Tigh in Battlestar Galactica are in it, too.
Of course, here's why you should really care: The film's directed by Fort Worth native Andrew Disney. And, since the movie got picked up for distribution by Orion following its premiere at the Tribeca Fim Festival, it's now looking like the biggest notch on the young filmmaker's belt to date. Orion will release the film in theaters and on Video On Demand simultaneously later this month, on June 19.
Here's the plot, more or less: With the concerns of the real-world looming over him, fifth-year college senior Caleb (Lacy) gets his old intramural football team back together for one last shot at gory. Hijinks ensue from there.
