We Found The Overly Attached Girlfriend. She's A Sophomore At UNT.
On June 6, a YouTube user named wzr0713 uploaded a video entitled “JB Fanvideo” to the popular video-sharing site as part of a Justin Bieber-backed crowd-sourced television commercial campaign for his latest single, “Girlfriend.”
But a funny thing happened on the way to virality.
User wzr0713's video, which turned “Girlfriend” into a spoof about particularly clingy significant others, hit a vastly wider audience than Bieber's efforts did, amassing a whopping 7.4 million views in its first two and a half weeks online and, subsequently, spawning a massively popular web meme called “Overly Attached Girlfriend.”
Then, a week ago, wzr0713 posted a second video, this one called “CJR Fanvideo,” in which she spoofs Carly Rae Jepsen's huge summer hit, “Call Me Maybe,” in the same obsessive significant other fashion. Thanks to some help from Google, which has hosted wzr0713's clip in its video spotlight section of users' homepages, “CJR Fanvideo” has proven even more popular than first video from the young starlet behind the spoofs, earning almost 8 million views in its first week online.
Thanks to all this attention sent wzr0713's way, meme fanatics have spent the past few weeks trying to figure out the star YouTube user's identity, spurred on by the sole clue provided in her clips — the fact that a name, Laina, hangs on the wall behind the desk where wzr0713 shoots her videos. On June 14, she was mistakenly identified as Laina Walker on one message board — a fact that a Twitter user claiming to be wzr0713 denies, while acknowledging that Laina is, indeed, her first name.
Last week, that same Twitter user announced that her 21st birthday was to fall this past weekend, on June 22. Over the weekend, our curiosity was further piqued when a Denton-dwelling Reddit user named rhmoore posted that he ran into the Overly Attached Girlfriend at Denton's Fry Street Tavern, complete with visual evidence supporting his statement.
Further supporting rhmoore's claim that Overly Attached Girlfriend is a Denton resident is a comment posted to knowyourmeme.com then identified Overly Attached Girlfriend as Laina Morris, a student at the University of North Texas. The school's student directory further confirms Morris as a sophomore pre-journalism major at UNT, albeit with no visual evidence to support the claim that she is, in fact, Overly Attached Girlfriend. Meanwhile, multiple attempts to contact Morris through Facebook have proven unsuccessful.
Nonetheless, today, through various Facebook interactions with mutual friends and a freshman year photo from Morris' Northwest High School yearbook, Central Track can indeed confirm Overly Attached Girlfriend's identity as North Texas-raised, UNT pre-journalism sophomore Laina Morris.
And a star, clearly, is born.
