A Police Officer Shot And Killed A 15-Year-Old High School Freshman In The Dallas Suburbs On Saturday Night.

At 11 p.m. on Saturday, a 15-year-old boy was shot and killed by a Balch Springs police officer who was responding to a report of underage drinking in the Dallas suburb, Mesquite News first reported earlier today.

According to a statement released by BSPD, officers reported hearing gunshots shortly after arriving on the scene, then witnessed an “unknown altercation with a vehicle backing down the street towards the officers in an aggressive manner.” One of the officers then opened fire on the car, striking the front seat passenger, who was then taken to a hospital where he later died.

At a BSPD press conference this afternoon, a representative of the victim’s family said he was a football player and a straight-A student at Mesquite High School. Local attorney Lee Merritt has since further identified the victim on Facebook as Jordan Edwards, a student at Mesquite High School.

Already, the case has drawn the attention of national civil rights and police brutality critic and writer Shaun King, who has started himself to being national attention to the matter.

Earlier today, the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department announced that it is investigating the shooting.

We will update the story as more details come to light.
