Jam On It.
Your New Year’s Eve is probably going to suck. Hey, it’s not just us trying to rain on your parade, it’s science. In fact, 83 percent of respondents to a recent survey say they were disappointed by their last NYE — not because they had a bad time necessarily, but because they set their expectations too high. Not to mention everyone seems to raise their prices.
On the other hand, your last Wednesday of 2016 does not have to suck, like, at all. There’s plenty of partying going on tonight, too, just without all the pretense and expectation — or the fear that midnight will strike and you’ll have no one to kiss. — Cory Graves
GoGo and Gritz Party at The Prophet Bar
Dallas’ favorite weekly jam session throws its last Wednesday night party of the year, this time on the other side of the venue, in The Prophet Bar’s big room. They’ll need all the extra space because four-time Grammy winner Shaun Martin (of Snarky Puppy and Kirk Franklin fame) and his GoGo Band will also be in the house. If you’ve ever wondered who the best musicians in town are, several of them will be on this stage tonight. — CG
Dillon Francis at Stereo Live
Dillon Francis’ collaboration with NGHTMRE “Need You” racked up almost five million plays on Souncloud since its release back in May. Maybe the dubstep DJ will drop some new beats for you if you show up. — Obed Manuel
Flash Gordon at Alamo Drafthouse (Cedars)
Flash Gordon himself, aka Sam J. Jones, will be in attendance to provide live commentary over the film. Maybe we’ll find out what he really thinks of that Queen theme song. — OM
Vision Board Party at Crown and Harp
Vision board collages are considered useful tools to help conceptualize goals and motivate you to achieve your dreams. Collectively, I’m assuming everybody wants a better 2017 filled with less racism, sexism and celebrity deaths. We can all dream. And if we can dream it we can achieve it – per an old motivational poster hanging on our old kindergarten classroom wall. Anyway, group arts and crafts time at the bar! — CG
Chanukah at West Village
On the fifth day of Chanukah the West Village holds its tenth annual celebration of the holiday with live music and other family-friendly festivities. — CG
North Oak Lawn Crime Watch Meeting at Oak Lawn Library
Every fourth Wednesday, neighbors and DPD meet at the Oak Lawn Branch Library to discuss ways to make the gayborhood a safer place. Lord knows, the block is hot. — CG
New Year’s Industry at Candleroom
There’s a reason NYE is called amateur night, because the non-regulars come out and drink more than they’re used to. It’s a shit show. And not only are barstaff all over town going to have to deal with these drunk assholes, they’ll be doing so at the expense of getting to do any celebrating of their own. Not so fast. Tonight’s a service industry party/pregame for the real thing. — CG
16th Annual What-A-Burger Norm-a-thon at Starpower
For 18 hours today, Norm Hitzges will broadcast live on The Ticket from the Starpower mothership location. Throughout the day, all manner of big name celebrity guests and athletes will roll through, all in the name of raising money for Austin Street Center for the Homeless. Pay it forward. He’ll ‘preciate ya pal. — CG
