Curtis Mayz Unloads A Candy-Coated Banger at No. 7.

This time of year, it’s become a bit of a tradition around here for us to not only count down the last few pages on the calendar, but also the best songs to come out of North Texas in the past 12 months. As I think we’ve shown in years past, the results are pretty much always diverse, with a few seemingly out-of-left-field choices in some pretty high-ranking slots. This year, in a countdown that will be unveiled in chunks day by day for the rest of the year, you’ll find some Grammy nominees alongside brand new bands that just started up this year, as well as some high school acts and, well, everything else in between. The one thing they have in common? They all put out fire in 2016.

Hip-hop’s long been obsessed with car culture — although, really, that’s not news to anyone. Still, it’s fitting that two of Dallas’ greatest rap songs of all time, Tum Tum’s “Caprice Music” and Dorrough’s “Ice Cream Paint Job,” follow in that same vein — especially when considering that Dallas is very much a driving city.

If anything, it’s mostly surprising that there aren’t more great automobile anthems sprouting up in this market. But, in 2016, Dallas got itself a killer one — the third in its trilogy, if you will — courtesy of Curtis Mayz.

Released as part of his sophomore Real.Life.Raps LP, Mayz’s “Candy Coated Caddy” is a certified banger, featuring the emcee bouncing over a swaggering beat with his high-pitched rhymes. In the hands of a lesser emcee, the AD CREATION-produced beat would be wasted; under Mayz’s watch, though, it’s spun into an aspirational anthem about the most basic desires of the modern straight male id — get cars, get money and get girls.

Oh, and it boasts one of the most memorable Dallas rap hooks in recent memory, too.

In many ways, it’s fitting the the song doesn’t really have an end, that it just transitions into the next song on Real.Life.Raps‘ track listing (a G-funk take called “Usually”). “Candy Coated Caddy” is a burst of basic instinct, a let-loose that masks frustration under its bump. There are no life lessons to be gleaned here, just emotions to unveil and unload.

Actually, the song’s got a lot of similarities with its subject: It might not be a very practical indulgence, but damn if it ain’t cool as fuck.
