Though the hype’s died down marginally at this point, it’s still quite common to see dozens of folks wandering around White Rock Lake, the Katy Trail, Lower Greenville, Deep Ellum or any number of Dallas’ city parks hunting for Pokémon on their smartphones. By now, most players have long surpassed level five, meaning that beyond simply searching for rare Pocket Monsters, joining and defending Gyms is another aspect of Pokémon Go available.

Like PokéStops, Gyms are found all over the city and can be just about anywhere, from random street signs to park benches, churches or other landmarks of varying notoriety. After brushing up on battle techniques, you’ll want to select a Gym near your home or work to target, somewhere you’ll frequently be around to defend or re-take if need be.

Another, far more appealing option, is to pick a Gym located at your favorite bar. For the sake of this story, we defined the word “bar” rather loosely to mean somewhere that has a place to sit and drink booze, and where you can settle in comfortably for those times when the battle is long.
