This Week, Maren Morris Was The Hero We Deserved.
Each week, we take a survey of the local music scene and try to determine which acts in town are really putting in work and seeing it pay off. Which bands have the most intriguing shows coming up? Which bands are getting the most press around town? Which bands have accomplished the most notable feats of late? Based off these criteria, our music writers submit a list to be weighted and compiled into a master list revealed each week in this here space. We like to think it's fairly revealing. For the third week in a row now and the fifth time overall, Maren Morris tops our weekly, North Texas music power rankings. We're not the only list she topped, either: She hit No. 1 on Billboard's country chart with her brand new album Hero this week, and her sales were good enough to put her No. 5 on the Billboard 200 as well.
She earned it!
Also knowing a thing or two about topping charts? Leon Bridges, who covered a Ginuwine song during his recent Bonarroo set, and Selena Gomez, who headlines the American Airlines Center this weekend. And speaking of headliners: Spinderella and her Salt-N-Pepa crew just got done headlining Verizon Theatre as part of that big I Love the '90s tour last weekend.
Other folks earned their spots this week thanks to newly released records. Joe Savage, Cut Throat Finches and Siberian Traps, CLIFFFS and Charley Crockett are but a few that have been celebrating new discs.
As for Sam Lao? We just called her 2016 album one of the year's best — well, so far, anyway.
Cut Throat Finches, meanwhile, just released a technologically advanced music video, one of the first bands in the area to embrace 360 technology. That's pretty notable, we'd say.
Elsewhere: Toadies debuted some new tunes at its annual Dia de los Toadies festival over the weekend; Eisley entered the studio; and Smash Mouth hearts Parquet Courts.
