A Proponent For A New Dallas Flag Hopes To Force The City's Hand With A Crowd-Funding Campaign.

You might recall that there was some discussion about the Dallas flag last year. A Dallasite named Dallas May, not very pleased with the design of the flag, decided that, you know what, we need a new one that has a “positive and unifying effect the citizens of Dallas.”

A few folks also wrote blog articles about this, ourselves included, in which it was claimed that the Dallas flag is a bad flag.

That's a bit dramatic, honestly. The Dallas flag is OK. It isn't spectacular by any stretch, no. But it isn't bad, per se. Take a look:

The good folks of North American Vexillological Association, who came up with the five standards that the well-regarded flag enthusiast Roman Mars champions, ranked Dallas' flag 21st among their favorite flag designs of American cities. Such is life. If only George Lois was the mayor of Dallas in the rootin' tootin' 1960s.

Still: May's design, seen above, is a vast improvement upon the current flag, and something we all should champion. Since Dallas doesn't have any immediate plans on adopting it, though, he's begun a crowdfunding effort for folks and business to purchase flags for themselves. More than that, by displaying their new flags proudly, flying this flag is essentially a means for people who are into this new design to publicly show their support for it. In a perfect world, hopes May, the flag becomes so popular city officials will have no other choice but to change the flag to the all-new design.

In the Indiegogo post, May says that his “desire is not just for you to purchase a flag for you, but to purchase one for your favorite local or neighborhood business as a token of thanks for investing in our communities.”

So, have at it. Here's to improving upon the current Dallas flag, everyone! I mean, we need a flag that matches our city. Because unlike our current flag, we aren't just OK; we are, as we all know, world-class.
