Back in October, Sean Penn did what the combined powers of the Mexican and American governments could not — he caught up with fugitive billionaire drug kingpin El Chapo for a casual chat in some unnamed jungle. That's right, the guy that played Jeff Spicoli in Fast Times tracked down the world's most wanted man.
Then, for a victory lap, he spent a couple months spewing out an 11,000-word interview piece for Rolling Stone. It's one of the most fascinating things we've ever heard — well in theory, anyway. Come on, who has time to read 11,000 words? To that end, I fear I've gone on too long already.
So how's about we just cut it out and get to the good stuff.
Janeane Garofalo at Granada Theater
The voice of TV's Daria was most recently seen in Netflix's Wet Hot American Summer sequel. In other words, the outspoken '90s comedian was last seen in a 2010's reboot of a 2000's film about an '80s summer camp. That was totally irrelevant, but completely fun to type. Josh Johnson opens.

Dallas is known for a lot of things — big hair, shopping, oil men, the Cowboys and a lot of other stuff besides for its literary scene. That's not to say one doesn't exist, though, and folks like The Writer's Garrett, Wordspace Dallas, The Wild Detectives and Will Evans' Deep Vellum publishing house are certainly helping change that. This panel discussion at the flagship Half Price store features Dallas journalist and author Karen Blumenthal (Tommy: The Gun That Changed America), Sanderia Faye (Mourner's Bench), Jeramey Kraatz (The Cloak Society) and the aforementioned Evans, discussing what each of us literary types can do to help support one another and further grow the scene.
Natural Born Killers at Alamo Drafthouse
Still on their kick of screening everything Tarantino has ever had anything to do with in the wake of The Hateful Eight's release, Alamo's showing Oliver Stone's 1994 black comedy, a film whose screenplay he wrote an early draft of. They changed quite a bit of it, but kept the blood, something gratuitously featured in most every one of his films.
Monday Mash at Local Hub
