Counting Down From 60 to 41.
The North Texas music scene has really come into its own the past 12 months. There hasn't been a year in recent memory when so many local artists appeared on the Billboard charts, played Saturday Night Live and other late night television programs, or otherwise appeared in the national spotlight. Here, as we've done in years past, we're highlighting what we think are the 100 best songs locally-tied of the year. The thing is, as far as this list is concerned, we're judging the quality of the songs irrespective of the popularity of the people putting them out — meaning, you're just as likely to have a song by a Grammy-winning act sandwiched between a couple of high school bands. Hey, it's just more interesting that way. Also keeping with tradition, we'll be rolling out the list in smaller, more digestible portions every weekday through the end of the month, complete with embedded streams of each. We think that gives each of these more than deserving acts a little more shine, and it also gives you a little more time to really check out each of these high quality tunes — including, presumably, a few that you may have missed upon their initial release.
On Friday, we shared with you the first batch of 20 songs in our annual Top 100 Local Songs Of The Year Countdown, a collection that saw some new faces (among them Kevin Aldridge, Danny Cainco and Essay EyE) posted right alongside a number of venerable Dallas music veterans (Sarah Jaffe, Toadies and Rhett Miller, included). Yesterday, our countdown continued with a second 20-song grouping that again showcased the strength of Dallas music newcomers in 2015 by highlighting the accomplishments of such acts as No Touching, Colton Carlyle, KoolQuise and Skagg Philips.
Today's grouping, which will serve as our final 20-song unveiling (moving forward, we'll be honoring smaller batches at a time before eventually slowing down to highlighting a single song each day), goes a slightly different direction than earlier ones.

If there's a trend to be seen in songs 60 to 41 in our countdown, it's that this group represents a variety of individual area musicians turning corners and making waves with new endeavors. For instance: Siamese (No. 58) is a new Dallas band whose members include former players in Mount Righteous and Missile; Vandoliers (No. 57) is spearheaded by former Phuss frontman Joshua Fleming; These Machines Are Winning (No. 52) here features members of True Widow joining in the fun started by The Crash That Took Me frontman and Polyphonic Spree player Dylan Silver's latest venture; and LUWUM (No. 41) is the awesome new project from former Senor Fin member Jesse Miller.
Also well-represented in this batch are a number of acts who are maintaining a high level of quality in their outputs after having already stunned us with their earlier releases. Included there? Nervous Curtains, The Outfit TX, Kacey Musgraves, Neon Indian, War Party, Snow Tha Product, St. Vincent and The Birds of Night.
But, really, all of the above is just after-the-fact observation. The real takeaway here is the music, which I implore you to check out immediately. — Pete Freedman
