Ships Gets Reborn And Gaming-Themed Restaurants Hit Frisco.

Welcome to The Spread, our weekly feature that aims to share all the area restaurant, food and beverage industry news that's fit to print. Except, this is the Internet, so space isn't a concern. Also: Good thing, because this is Dallas and this town always has breaking restaurant news going down like whoa.

Those eager to try out Matt McCallister's Filament will be happy to know that the Deep Ellum venture opens next Monday after having received its certificate of occupancy just last week. As for the menu, “modern Southern cuisine” takes shape in dishes like New Orleans-style barbecue shrimp, Berkshire pork chops and classic desserts by pastry chef Maggie Huff (FT33). The restaurant opens for dinner service at 5 p.m. on December 7.

In other opening news, two new eateries will open on the ground floor of Gearbox's new Frisco headquarters, both of them gaming-themed to fit with the Duke Nukem company's upper floors. First will come a cafe called @nerdvana.coffee+shop, which is scheduled for a March opening. Restaurant @nerdvana.food+spirits will come sometime later next summer.

Downtown Dallas will also soon be home to a bevy of new dining options at the revamped Dallas Farmers Market. Most of the restaurants will be located in The Market (read: Shed 2), and come as part of the market's $65 million renovation project, according to GuideLive. Joining the lineup are a tamale house called La Popular, an outpost of Taqueria La Ventana and a combination brick-and-mortar space for Nammi and Coolhaus, among others. The Market begins serving food on Friday, December 11.

In Southlake, Oklahoma-based rotisserie chicken chain Redrock Canyon Grill is set to open its first Texas location. The menu is pretty simple, with the signature dish of rotisserie chicken, redskin mashed potatoes and sweet glazed carrots at the forefront. Other entrees like mustard-crusted pork chops, St. Louis-style ribs and enchiladas will also be available, all around a $15 to $30 price point. An opening is slated for late February or early March.

Down in Trinity Groves, Sugar Skull Cafe has shuttered its doors after running for less than a year. The fast-casual Mexican street food concept was the third failed concept for Phil Romano's restaurant incubator, following behind the footsteps of Potato Flats and Didi's Tamale Diner.

Meanwhile, Urban Taco is hosting an Agave Trail Dinner. Five courses will be paired with five different types of agave spirits with one course presented by the folks of Revolver Taco Lounge. The menu will include dishes like a mezcal-cured ceviche over chicharron tostadas and a selection of empanadas. The event takes place on Thursday, December 10, from 6 to 9 p.m.

Speaking of delicious news: Over on Greenville Avenue, longtime neighborhood favorite Ships Lounge is to reopen with Jason Boso (Truck Yard, Twisted Root Burger Co.) behind the helm. This news confirms rumors that new management was to take over for owner Charlie Hunt, according to The Dallas Morning News. Per those reports, things are to remain largely the same at the spot, with the exception of minor tweaks to the wine and beer lists, and the fact that credit cards will now be accepted. But a reopening isn't on the horizon quite yet, as The City Plan Commission still has to vote to renew the bar's late-night permit this Thursday.

Later, on Saturday, December 5, Green Door Public House is one of several bars in town hosting a Prohibition Repeal Party. The night will feature drink specials, karaoke, burlesque and prize. Festivities begin at 10 p.m. Likewise, World of Beer will feature 10-cent beers at its celebration this Saturday, December 5.

In more local beer news: Grapevine Craft Brewery is combining prohibition repeal celebrations with its second anniversary party on December 5. The day will be commemorated by a release of the Kentucky Common prohibition-style ale, as well as $3 pints all day. The event takes place from noon to 10 p.m.

Also on December 5, the Garland beer-for-life brewpub Intrinsic Smokehouse & Brewery is holding its grand opening. A handful of house brews, sangria, sodas and guest tappings will be available alongside slow-smoked barbecue from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Finally, Community Beer Co. is hosting morning yoga this Saturday, with a complimentary pint and brew tour following the session. Tickets are available here.
