Make Halloween Great Again.

Before heading into the holiday weekend, there are a few things you desperately need to know. You know how everybody always says Daylight Savings Time, plural? Yeah, it’s actually just Saving, singular.

That, of course, happens this Sunday morning, leading to an extra hour that the bars are allowed to stay open, and a super sloppy Halloween.

The next day, meanwhile, is commonly known as Dia de los Muertos. Except, that’s wrong, too. It’s actually just Dia de Muertos. It seems like we’ve all been doing it wrong.

Well, it’s time to put an end to all that. God’s given us an extra hour of weekend, so it’s even more imperative that we really get out there and do it right. — Cory Graves

Friday
KEGL Freakers’ Ball w/ Marilyn Manson at Verizon Theatre
With the benefit of hindsight, it is hard to look back upon Marilyn Manson’s rise to popularity during our impressionable pre-teen years when our parents and teachers crammed down our throats the idea that Manson was the most sadistic and evil human ever to exist. We were pretty sure at the time that he probably had Satan’s number programmed into his Zack Morris-sized cell phone. Even though the ideas that he would have actually removed one of his eyes with a spoon or removed one of his own ribs to fellatiate himself seem utterly hilarious as adults, we can’t help but think fondly about the years’ worth of amusement the shock-rocker has provided us. And for the second time in recent years he plays a Halloween show right here in town as part of KEGL’s annual Freakers’ Ball. The Cult, Theory of a Deadman, Pop Evil and Aranda open. — CG

Live Nudity at The Dallas Black Academy of Arts and Letters
Last we checked in with Erykah Badu about her announced upcoming one-woman show for The Dallas Black Academy of Arts and Letters’ 39th season, she told us outright that she hadn’t yet put pen to paper for the affair — this just a month and a half out from the event’s start. “I haven’t written it yet,” she conceded on September 9 about her show — which debuted last night at the Naomi Bruton Theatre in Downtown Dallas, and continues these next two. At that point, she was toying then with the idea of improvising the whole thing right on the spot — and, while we suppose that’s still possible, it seems the show is starting to take on at least a semblance of a shape. Or, uh, has it? Tough to say. Recently over on Guidelive, TBAAL founder and director Curtis King describes the show as “a reflection of her journey” even as Badu denies that it’s a “linear life story” and says that it’s “not biographical.” Guess you’ll just have to show up and see. — Pete Freedman

Rageville at The Bomb Factory
Rageville is glowin’ up. Remember: Travi$ Scott successfully headlined last year’s inaugural festival with support from some of the city’s rowdiest acts, including Blue the Misfit, Crit Morris and The Outfit TX at the Prophet Bar. Not bad, not bad. And yet, somehow, things are looking even better for Rageville’s second year. For its second outing, Future — the absolute hottest rapper in the game right now — will headline a trap-inclined bill also featuring electronic wizards Paper Diamond, Araabmuzik and 12th Planet. Also new this year is the festival’s home — the about-four-times-bigger Bomb Factory. — H. Drew Blackburn

Ludacris at Dr. Pepper Arena
What’s your fantasy? If it happens to be seeing Ludacris yell, “Move Bitch!” at the Dallas Stars practice facility, welp, you’re in luck. Hot of an arc on Empire, the rapping actor born Chris Bridges will roll through to visit his hoes in Frisco’s area code. — CG

Return of the Living Dead 30th Anniversary 35mm Print + Behind the Screen Punk Rock Zombie Party at Texas Theatre
Before 1968’s Night of the Living Dead, zombie culture wasn’t necessarily all that widespread. And what George A. Romero’s flick did for the mainstreaming of standard, run-of-the-mill zombies, Dan O’Bannon’s 1985 black comdey sequel did for punk-rock zombies. As such, following a screening of the film, a bunch of punk bands will perform live behind the screen in front of a bunch of folks dressed as punks, zombies and/or zombie punks. — CG

Haunted Fest w/ Zeds Dead at South Side Ballroom
The Canadian duo of DC and Hooks — who combine to make up the Pulp Fiction-referencing EDM outfit Zeds Dead, won’t disappoint with its mostly dubstep heavy set tonight. Fellow electro-heavyweights Morgan Page, Cazzette and several others will keep this monster party going. — Mikel Galicia

DIIV, No Joy, Sunflower Bean at Trees
In support of Is the Is Are, New York shoegazers DIIV take to Dallas for the first time in almost three years. But instead of playing the parking lot adjacent to Trees this time, it’ll headline a hazy, show inside with the likes of No Joy and newcomers Sunflower Bean who, with a recent 7-inch release on Fat Possum, continue make waves everywhere it goes. Embrace those lit instrumentations and fall right in, as you lose sight on the Friday night before Halloween. — Evan Henry

Sean Patton at Arlington Improv
Not to be confused with New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton, New Orleans-based comedian Sean Patton does his act tonight in Arlington. Not that you would, really: Patton’s not what one would call the athletic-looking type, although, he did take a year’s worth of stage fighting classes as a goof. Anyway, you can listen to him recounting the tale of an especially wild Mardi Gras eve in his hometown here if you’re on the fence about driving out to the suburbs tonight. — CG

Salt-N-Pepa at The Rustic
Not only did the members of Salt-N-Pepa once again reunite with DJ Spinderella last summer, but Cheryl “Salt” James finally publicly cited the Dallas-based DJ as being an official member of the group. “We just reunited again,” Salt said a charity event last year. “Spinderella was performing sporadically with us and we decided to bring her back full-time. She is the ‘N’ forever.” How sweet. — CG

Charles Busch at Wyly Theatre
At 61 years of age, cabaret legend Charles Busch has been performing in women’s clothing since before the term “drag queen” was even a thing. For the next three days, the Tony-nominated entertainer will be singing tunes from the American songbook and telling humerous stories about his glamorous life and celeb pals. — CG

Sarah Colonna at Hyena’s (Fort Worth)
Best-selling author and frequent Chelsea Lately guest Sarah Colonna started her three-city Metroplex tour at Hyena’s Plano last night before keeping the laughs coming at Hyena’s Fort Worth and Dallas locations on Friday and Saturday, chronicling the drunken misadventures of late-30s life along the way. — CG

Laugh until Somethin’ Shady comes out of your nose as the brewery-set comedy tour stops by one of the Brewing District Design District’s many breweries. — CG

Jamey Johnson at House of Blues
Nashville country sucks, sure. But this ain’t that. This is some real Alabama ish. Fuck you bro country. Long live the sad bastard, tear-in-your-whiskey stuff. — Trace McCaslin

Barb Wire Dolls at Three Links
Grungy Greek punk band Barb Wire Dolls only formed in the 2010s, but it’s sound is one heavily rooted in ’80s metal. The chaotic and kooky local outfit Scary Cherry & the Bang Bangs makes this a tasty pre-Halloween treat. — CG

Halloween III at Alamo Drafthouse
Disclaimer: 1982’s third installment of the Halloween franchise doesn’t include any elements from Halloween, Halloween II or Halloween IV. That includes Michael Myers. It’s about some scary Halloween masks that fuck kids’ faces all up. Still, it’d be a lot better if it was that man in the painted white William Shatner that was causing all the disfigurement. — CG

Monster’s Ball at Crown and Harp
In what he hopes becomes an annual thing, local performer Dezi 5 holds his first-ever Halloween-themed Monster’s Ball party featuring some of Dallas’ hippest acts. To wit, Sudie, Buffalo Black and a Blue, the Misfit DJ set will keep the party going. — CG

Heartbyrne, Naked Lunch at Granada Theater
In Halloween tradition, its the one time of year cover bands universally aren’t eye-rolled. According to the Granada’s website this Austin-based Talking Heads tribute act goes good with Talking Heads, David Byrne, and the ’80s. Go figure. Steely Dan tribute, Naked Lunch, opens. — CG

It’s the freakin’ weekend, baby. And, as R. Kelly once told us, that mean’s we’re about to have us some fun. What kind of fun, you ask? Well Kelly’s here to personally see to it that nobody’s gonna top this shit. — HDB

Halloween Night w/ The Gorehounds, Sealion, Stab Yr Front at Three Links

This one promises to be hella-scary — for members of the Sharks, anyway. The Stars are off to one of the hottest starts in the league, and Captain Jamie Benn is gunning to win a second straight Art Ross trophy. — CG

Texas Bicycle and Beer Expo at Old City Park
How many bike rides meet up, end or take periodic breaks at various breweries and craft beer bars? Like most of em, right? The two just seem to go hand in hand. So it makes sense that this bike swap meet would also be 50 percent craft beer festival. — CG

The Coathangers, The Birth Defects at The Foundry (Free)
The Coathangers are the prototypical tongue-in-cheek punk band. Been that way since the beginning, too, ever since the group got its start with a sort of joke performance at a party. But The Coathangers somehow managed to keep that momentum rolling. The band’s released four albums since 2007, including last year’s Suck My Shirt. And while the instrumentation has gotten a bit richer during that span — and, with it, the tone of the albums a bit more serious — the band is still as fun as its ever been. It makes their live shows hard to miss. Good thing, then, the band’s playing two shows in Dallas on Halloween night. This first one also features The Birth Defects. — Mikel Galicia

Nobunny, The Coathangers at Pariah Arts
The often outrageous stage attire of rabbit-loving musician Justin Champlin seem to get as much press — if not more — than his brand of retro-tinged garage rock. It’s been written before that Champlin’s the biggest Ramones fan in Tucson, Arizona. It’s a fact that we don’t doubt, as the former Elvis impersonator is also said to have started his current project the same day Joey Ramone died. The Coathangers, playing its second show of the evening, open, as do locals Party Static, Pearl Earl, Shooknite and Yung Wave. — CG

Ghostland Observatory at The Bomb Factory
What is it with these guys and playing Dallas every year near Halloween? Not that the local sororities are complaining. Bayonne, nee Roger Sellers opens. — Chelsea Upton

Swandiver, The Superbrowls, The B-53s at Dan’s Silverleaf
This Halloween, Swandiver will be masquerading as the Violent Femmes and The Superbrowls will go as the Misfits. As for The B-53s, we can’t quite remember whose catalog they’ll be whipping out. We’re sure we’ll think of it here in a sec, though. — CG

Vinnie Paul’s Rockstar Halloween Bash at Gas Monkey Bar N’ Grill
The original Cowboy from Hell will be partying ’80s style at his eponymous Halloween bash with Def Leppard and Motley Crue cover bands performing, and a Vinnie Paul look-alike contest. Hell yeah. — CG

Halloween w/ Straight Tequila Night, The Clinton Years at Double Wide
Like the Double Wide itself, really, this evening promises to be a little bit country, and a little bit rock ‘n’ roll — and a whole lotta ’90s. Straight Tequila Nights will two-step through your favorite ’90s country hits while The Clinton Years will harken back to the days when KDGE was still found at 94.5-FM on the dial. — CG

Improvised Horror Movie at Dallas Comedy House
You’ve never seen a horror movie like this, but that’s mostly just because this one doesn’t exist yet. Tonight at the DCH — and every Saturday through Halloween — crews will improvise live, cabin-in-the-woods-style slashers based on audience suggestion. Seating is limited, and advanced tickets are strongly recommended. Believe us, though, it’ll slay. — CG

Fort Worth Monster Dash at Panther Island Pavilion
Head’s up, you’ve got to register by Friday if you want to take part in these costumed up 5K, 10K or half marathons. Pro tip: dress as something that carries an umbrella. — CG

Dead Sara at Trees
Hollywood rocker band, Dead Sara, is a band perhaps most well-known for covering a Nirvana tune. The band’s take on “Heart Shaped Box” was impressive enough, anyway, that Dave Grohl said “Dead Sara should be the next biggest rock band in the world.” The show may not prove quite as exciting as that one time the real Nirvana played this room but, hey, it’s something. — CG

Broken at It’ll Do
Chris Lorenzo once told Vice‘s UK outpost that he produces something like 200-300 songs per year. Up until recently, a lot of those would get sold and credited to other “producers” that would, in turn, blow up on the merits of his work. So there’s a pretty good chance you’ve heard plenty of his material before. He headlines It’ll Do’s big Halloween disco, where Left/Right, Zander and Red Eye will also spin. — CG

#CRISPdallas Halloween Party at That That
The Deep Ellum loft space/DIY venue affectionately known as That That has quite the reputation for after-parties and other house shows. This one kicks off a few minutes before midnight, making it socially acceptable to wear costumes and brand it a Halloween affair. Then, A.Dd+, Sam Lao and Bobby Sessions will keep the party rolling to the wee hours of the morning. — CG

Dark Side of Vinyl at Harvest House
For the second time this weekend, Vinyl will be playing Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon from front to back. I guess if you’re going to go through all the trouble of learning it, you might as well get some mileage out of it. — CG

Homage Nation Comedy Night at Kessler Theater
This Halloween, Clint Werth, Saffy Herndon, Silas Courson, Katy Evans, Dan Danzy, Alex Axon, Brian Breckenridge and half-a-dozen other local comedians will be dressing and performing as their favorite comedy heroes and blazing through 10-minute sets. Hey, if cover bands get away with it this time of year, why not? — CG

Halloween Organ Spooktacular at Meyerson Symphony Center
If there’s any organ tune more popular than “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” it’s gotta be Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor. And though this 11 a.m. show is geared towards the kiddies, hearing that sucker performed on the Meyerson’s world class C.B. Fisk Opus pipe organ and its 4,535 pipes sounds too killer to pass up. — CG

The Rich Girls, Depeshi at Granada Theater
The Rich Girls have gone too far but, y’know, it doesn’t really matter anyway, as this Halloween the band will forego its usual Hall and Oates schtick to perform Purple Rain in full. Lord knows they’re certainly sexy enough to pull it off. As per usual, Ishi’s going as its regular Depeche Mode alter ego. — CG

Who’s Bad: The Ultimate Michael Jackson Tribute Band at Gas Monkey Live
For the last ten years, Who’s Bad has been winning over Michael Jackson fans’ hearts all over the nation. The eight member band continues to show the world Michael’s talent and the dedication he had towards his music. And until that MJ hologram learns more than one dance routine, this outfit’s probably the closest approximation you’ll get to the real thing these days. — Lauren Rushing

Sunday
Chris Cornell at Majestic Theatre
With a new album in tow, the greatest rock vocalist of this or any other generation drops by the beautiful Majestic for a solo acoustic gig. Heavy is the head that wears the crown. — CG

The Struts at Dada (Sold Out)
Queen-mining English rockers The Struts sure are dominating the U.S. press these days. It seems like everywhere you turn somebody is hyping them up. KXT, for one, can’t get enough of them. So, I suppose it goes without saying that with this mega-hyped American tour the band had little trouble selling out Dada in short order. Andrew Watt opens. — CG

Funk Volume 2015 Tour at The Bomb Factory
Dizzy Wright is a young rapper with more on his mind than money and marijuana. With a story much like legendary rapper Tupac’s, Wright comes from a background of hard work and dedication. At the young age of eight, Dizzy got his start in the hip-hop community and has been grinding ever since, playing The Bomb Factory’s more intimate sister venue on his last few stops through town. This weekend, he moves up to the bigs, sharing the stage with Hopsin, Jarren Benton and DJ Hoppa. — Chrissi Chetwood

With an extra hour of drinking this Halloween, some hair of the dog will ceratinly be in order. Sunday afternoon, they’ll be celebrating Dia del Perro over at the new Eight Bells, where proceeds from all you boozehounds’ tabs will benefit Animal Rescue of Texas. We hear that some of the pups that program is working with will even be hanging out on the patio to show you their gratitude in person. — CG

The Genitorturers at Trees
Last time long-running Floridian fetish rockers The Genitorturers played Trees, Robert “Freddy Krueger” Englund himself showed up. We can’t promise that particular brand of nightmare will go down on Elm Street this Dia de Muertos, but the band’s plenty shocking in its own right, to say the least. — CG

We Love Gloves: A Day of Clean Up at Rubber Gloves
Hey, there’s nothing wrong with asking for a little help sometimes. And, this Sunday, Rubber Gloves is asking for a little of just that to help clean up the place.
