Turn Me Up.
Today is St. Patrick's Day. Do with that information what you will, whether it be making sure you wear something green so as not to get pinched by one of your a-hole friends, or just remembering to watch out for any potentially impaired drivers out and about this evening.
No matter what color you choose to wear today, you might end up wanting to pinch yourself just the same once you catch a glimpse of tonight's happenings.
No, you're not dreaming. Believe it or not, each of the following is really happening. — Cory Graves
Twin Shadow at Granada Theater
George Lewis Jr., or Twin Shadow, released his first album, Forget, on Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear's Terrible Records label, but the album was later picked up by 4AD. The switch has worked out for him; these days, as he's celebrating his third album release for Eclipse, his brand of formerly underground dance pop is more popular than ever. Botany opens. — Carly Seitz
PRhyme at Trees
When Royce Da 5'9″ and DJ Premiere first began toying with the idea of combining forces, they decided that, to make it work, they'd have to push themselves to create something even greater than the sum of their parts. Critics seem to agree it's a mission they accomplished in spades, oft throwing out phrases like “instant classic” when discussing the duo's 2014 debut LP. — CG
Third Man Rolling Record Store at Good Records
You've eaten at food trucks, you may have heard about Warby Parker's school bus, but have you ever bought your vinyl from a pop-up truck? Well, you'll have a chance to when Jack White's own Third Man Rolling Record Store will post up shop in Good Records' parking lot this Tuesday on its way to SXSW. It's definitely one of the more unique roving pop-ups! — CS
Quiet Man at The Magnolia
Originally released in 1952, The Quiet Man was the first American film to be filmed in Ireland. The Magnolia Theatre will show it tonight, which just so happens to be St. Patrick's Day. Coincidence? We think not. Catch one of two showtimes: 7:25 p.m. or 10 p.m. — CS
Rubblebucket at Three Links
Rubblebucket have gone from a groove-oriented, Afro-beat/jazz hybrid that put out one hell of a horn-heavy long player back in 2009. Since then the band's subsequent releases have edged closer and closer towards the oversatured world of bland, electro-tinged indie pop, relegating those horns to minor flourishes and fleeting bits of color in the process. It's too bad, because as good as they still are, Rubblebucket's self-titled debut was one of the best things that came out that year. — CG
Halsey + Young Rising Sons at Dada
In the past year, with the help of producers that have worked with Lana Del Rey and Sia, Ashley Frangipane has transformed her acoustic, Ed Sheeran-esque output into a buzzing batch of electronic pop songs. Though her debut LP under the Halsey moniker won't be released until later this year, the songs on her Soundcloud page have been played several hundred thousand times. New Jersey rockers Young Rising Sons co-headline this one, and Olivver opens. — CG
Last Bison at The Prophet Bar
The Last Bison, which originally just went by Bison, is an indie folk band from Virginia. When their debut album's first single, “Switzerland,” played on the radio, on WROX-FM in Norfolk, Virginia, it received the biggest audience response the station's director said he had seen in his five years there. Needless to say, it's a pretty impressive group. Cereus Bright opens. — CS
SX Foreplay at Crown and Harp
Tonight King Camel brings the South By to you, hosting this spillover-rich event that'll make use of both of Crown and Harp's stages. Blackstone Rangers, Night School, Triathlon, The Mystery Lights, Flaamingos, Dott, Frauen, Teen Slut and Tidals each perform, and Wardance DJ Oliver Sheppard and Moonsounds Records' Jacques Urioste will spin music between sets. Music starts at 6 p.m. — CG
The Last Boy Scout at Alamo Drafthouse
Tonight, the Drafthouse continues its four-day celebration of Bruce Willis' birthday with a screening of The Last Boy Scout. — CS
