Red Bull Sound Select Presents: TOPS at Three Links
Emerging from the same Montreal DIY scene that spawned acts like Grimes and Majical Cloudz before them, TOPS is the latest in a long line of bands borne out of Arbutus Records' “warehouse pop” network. We lump them in with those other bands not to pigeonhole them — really, they don't sound anything alike — but to point out how rich that particular scene is at the moment. And how talked-about, too: To date, TOPS' biggest bout of publicity came back in September when ex-touring member Mac DeMarco briefly flashed his balls in the band's “Way To Be Loved” video — although, to be fair, the band was certainly on some people's radars well before that. One such person would be Gorilla vs. Bear's Chris Cantalini, who ranked the band's debut album No. 8 on his “Best Albums of 2012” list and its Fleetwood Mac/Berlin-mining follow-up his No. 4 on last year's list. So it makes sense that, as that famed taste-making site makes its first foray into curating a Red Bull Sound Select show, it would tap this retro-leaning pop act — along with LA-based Puro Instinct and Dallas' Blackstone Rangers — to headline their first lineup. Miranda Lambert at American Airlines Center
Texas native Miranda Lambert was an instant hit when she first hit the country music scene as a signed artist. Her debut album, Kerosene, was certified Platinum, and she's had several albums and many singles since then. Her most recent album, the appropriately named, Platinum, includes several singles that have made it onto Billboard's top country music charts, including “Somethin' Bad,” a duet with Carrie Underwood. Lambert is a pretty impressive singer, to say the least, and proof that girls are truly making the best country music at the moment. Justin Moore, Sunny Sweeney and Jukebox Mafia open. — Carly Seitz
Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet at Meyerson Symphony Center
You've read the story — you may have even seen one or more of the movie renditions — but have you ever heard a symphony based on Romeo and Juliet? Well, if your answer is no, you have a chance to when the Dallas Symphony Orchestra performs Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's orchestral work Romeo and Juliet this Thursday through Saturday at the Meyerson. Dallas composer Chase Dobson's Piano Concerto No. 1 and Robert Schumann's Symphony No. 2 will also be performed. — CS
Possessed by Paul James at The Prophet Bar
Konrad Wert — or his one-man band alter ego, Possessed by Paul James, rather — will perform tonight at The Prophet Bar. Armed with little more than a rickety chair, a couple of stringed instruments and an un-mic'ed wooden plank he'll stomp upon for percussion, Wert will surely turn in a rowdy, compelling and ultimately inspiring set. Opening will be a solo set from Dead Flowers frontman Corey Howe, and Chris Norwood. — Pete Freedman
Rock and Roll Over at House of Blues
Who cares if local tribute act Rock and Roll Over isn't the real KISS; the '70s hard rockers were really more about image over substance anyway. Through all the makeup and costumes and whatnot, you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference anyway. — CG
Saints of Valory at Gas Monkey Bar N' Grill
No, “valory” is not a word, but we'll let that slide. Though Saints of Valory's four band members come three different continents (South America, Europe, and the U.S.), they all currently live in Austin, TX, so we're proud to accept and support them as our now-fellow Texans. Perhaps you will, too, when the band performs this Thursday with The Wind and The Wave and The Rocketboys. — CS
There Will Be Blood at Texas Theatre
Perhaps it is thanks, in part, to the current praise being heaped on Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice, that the folks at Texas Theatre have decided to screen the director's award-winning 2007 American drama, There Will Be Blood, this evening. Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Dano star in this film, which finds silver miner Daniel Plainview on a quest in search of wealth during Southern California's oil boom of the late 19th century. Just remember to be on guard if you opt to order a milkshake from the concession stand. — LR
Hot Mikado at Theatre Three
The musical Hot Mikado is set in a place with ridiculous laws (like no flirting), for which the punishment is death. Yet citizens enjoy jazz and blues music, despite the life-or-death consequences. It makes us think of that one Parks and Recreation episode where government employees of Peru come and tell watchers that Peruvians can face jail time for something as minuscule as skipping a doctor's appointment. Or when hugging someone in middle school counted as PDA and could earn you detention. Only now, the stakes are death. Craziness! Anyway, Hot Mikado is supposed to be a pretty funny play, and it will be at Theatre Three starting tonight, and running through April 5. — CS
The Trishas at Kessler Theater
When Jamie Wilson, Liz Foster, Kelley Mickwee and Savannah Welch first performed together, they didn't even have a name for their group — much less plans to pursue musical careers together. They just wanted to perform a couple of songs in honor of Savannah's dad, singer-songwriter Kevin Welch. But the audience enjoyed them so much that venues began approaching them asking if they'd like to play some shows, so the girls decided to dub themselves The Trishas and just go with the flow. Now, with a couple albums under their collective belts, the ladies are still performing live shows. And you can catch one this Thursday when they perform at The Kessler. Courtney Patton opens. — CS
Instagram Scavenger Hunt in Deep Ellum
Deep Ellum has a rich music scene and history, especially for jazz and blues. Due to its reputation as a world-renowned music and entertainment district, the Deep Ellum Community Association has decided to host a music-themed Instagram scavenger hunt this evening. The contest will start off at 6 p.m. with each participant receiving a free cocktail (each participant must be 21+) and continue as teams solve as many challenges as they can until the hunt ends at 8:30. Prizes will include free tickets to shows, as well as a free recording session at Ferralog Studios, where acts like Party Static and Goodnight Ned recorded their most recent releases. If you do go down to Deep Ellum for this event, just be sure to put your money in your shoe. Oh, and register in advance. — CS
All-Con at Crowne Plaza North Dallas
Celebrity guests at this four-day sci-fi convention include Doug “Silver Surfer” Jones, Cerina “Yellow Ranger” Vincent, as well as a smattering of well-known animators, pupetteers, special effects artists and other bit part actors. — CG
Bishop Arts Wine Walk
Once again, wine enthusiasts and shopaholics will unite in Oak Cliff for another one of Bishop Arts District's quarterly Wine Walks. There, some 20 or so establishments will offering everything from wine to sangria spritzers and bites to eat. For $10 — cash only—you'll receive a stemless wine glass adorned with the Bishop Arts District's logo and a list of participating shops to begin their wine-infused shopping.
