Buffalo Black Had A Sweet Week.
Each week, we take a survey of the local music scene and try to determine which acts in town are really putting in work and seeing it pay off. Which bands have the most intriguing shows coming up? Which bands are getting the most press around town? Which bands have accomplished the most notable feats of late? Based off these criteria, our music writers submit a list to be weighted and compiled into a master list revealed each week in this here space. We like to think it's fairly revealing. It's shaping up to be a pretty big weekend for Buffalo Black.
Come Friday night, he'll get to see Spike Lee's newest joint, Da Sweet Blood of Jesus, for the first time over at the Texas Theatre, which is screening the thing all weekend long. He'll likely appreciate it more than anybody else that happens to be in the theatre on Friday, too, as Lee handpicked the Dallas rapper's “Enter the Void” track to appear in the film's soundtrack and trailer.
We imagine he'll probably be riding even higher after the screening, when he headlines a behind-the-screen concert at the theater featuring a veritable who's who of DFW emcees (read: Blue, the Misfit, Lord Byron, -topic and X, the Misfit among others). And to top it off, Buffalo Black earned a bit of additional shine this week, finding himself at the top of our weekly, local music power rankings for the first time.
Meanwhile, Blue, the Misfit, was also a big player in last week's biggest show, appearing alongside the ever-buzzing Sarah Jaffe and Sam Lao at Trees. Other notable shows of late include last weekend's Party Static album release, this Saturday's free Old 97's show as part of KTCK 1310-AM The Ticket's annual Ticketstock event, Power Trip's area homecoming show at Rubber GLoves on Sunday night, and Seryn's own Sunday night album-release and homecoming show at Dan's Silverleaf. That Seryn show, it's worth pointing out, is part of this weekend's Thin Line Fest, which was kicked off with a screening of Jason Lee's Midlake documentary.
Elsewhere this week: The Toadies helped a woman in New York tell her beau of eight years that she loved him for the first time; Erykah Badu had a Twitter non-beef with Azealia Banks; and Vanilla Ice was arrested for burglary in Florida.
It was a bit of weird week.
