A diner in Brooklyn was recently flabbergasted when the entire kitchen and waitstaff of the taco joint he was at all left their posts to flag down a passing ice cream truck. As noted on Yelp, this ordeal, which they still can't believe happened, lasted a whole ten minutes! Gasp!
Rightly so, the stick-in-the-mud Yelper known only as Ross F. was subsequently blasted for not simply joining them and getting a Choco Taco of his own and/or completely lacking a sense of adventure.
Don't be a Ross F. tonight. Choose your own adventure, but don't be afraid to see where the night takes you, either. — Cory Graves
Dave Chappelle at House of Blues
We should be used to this, I suppose. Two years ago, Dave Chappelle did pretty much the same thing he did this time around, throwing the whole town into a tizzy when by announcing a show on short notice. Of course, whereas that one would go on the very next day, Chappelle graciously gave us a little more warning, this time, letting us know about tonight's pair of shows a whole 11 days in advance. These shows, of course, will mark Chappelle's third time through Dallas in as many years: After that surprise return to town in 2012 (check out a bootleg of that show's audio here), he came through town again last year as the headliner for Funny or Die's inaugural Oddball comedy tour. Still, at the very least, Chappelle's probably the greatest comedian of the '00s. So don't act like your interest isn't piqued. — Pete Freedman
Badu Love Chappelle at Foundation Room (Free)
It's no secret that Dave Chappelle and Erykah Badu are pals: The Dallas-born singer not only performed on Chappelle's Show, but she flew up to New York earlier this year too to perform as part of the comedian's 10-night run at Radio City Music Hall. And tonight, Badu host a free-to-attend after-party in Chappelle's honor on Monday, right upon the completion of his second set of the night. Called “Badu Love Chappelle: The Official Dave Chappelle After Jam Hosted by DJ Lo Down Loretta Brown aka Erykah Badu,” the party will kick off in the House of Blues' Foundation Room at 11 p.m. Chappelle will be there. Badu's in charge of the vibes. Capacity is very limited — entrance will be determined on a first-come, first-served basis. You've got to be 21 or older to get in. — PF
Chad D's 15th Annual Toy Drive at Libertine Bar
There's a lot to be said for longevity, and for Chad Davenport, this marks the 15th year of his annual toy drive/concert on Lower Greenville. Bring an unwrapped toy to The Libertine tonight for the Dallas Life Foundation, and be regaled by the music of Travis Brink, Aaron Burton, RTB2, Ryan Hamilton, Erik Chandler, Madison King, Dustin Cavazos, Tommy Hale and Boys Named Sue. — CG
Blind Boys of Alabama at Meyerson Symphony Center
The Blind Boys of Alabama have been doing this longer than Rhett Miller — and most of the rest of you — have been alive. On the road since 1945, the blind gospel singers are just as uplifting when singing the theme song from The Wire as they are doing spiritual cuts from their new Christmas album. — CG
Bijules Trunk Show at Grange Hall
Despite what she says, Beyonce does not, in fact, wake up like that. Rather, she spends who knows how long to achieve that flawless look, she oft throws on a piece of Kim Jule's jewelry. For the next two days the New York-based designer will be in town, showing off some of her pieces at Dallas' Grange Hall. — CG
Soul Search at Three Links
So Cal hardcore outfit Soul Search draw frequent comparisons to DMIZE, and for its part, the band's pretty open about the influence. The band's song “Soul Search” is where it derives its name. Skinfather, Fury Hc, Vulgar Display, Sold Short and Afraid of Life open. — CG
Edward Scissorhands at Alamo Drafthouse
Of all the gothic comedy's Tim Burton's been responsible for, his fourth film, Edward Scissorhands is still among his best. The ugly duckling/gentle giant tale is the film that spawned the short-lived “Wino Forever” relationship between co-stars Winona Ryder and Johnny Depp, as well as the ongoing, nine film deep relationship between Depp and Burton. Or like the old tagline went; the film will touch you, even if he can't. — CG
“Island of Misfit Toys” Poetry Reading at Magnolia Lounge (Free)
While they may not be as kooky cowboys riding ostriches, poets are still regarded, somewhat, as the “misfit toys” of the performing arts world. Of course, if they weren't, their poetry wouldn't be any good anyhow. A dozen area poets will read at this one, and musician Lily Taylor — who wrote one of our favorite songs of the year — also performs. — CG
