Find Somebody To Lean On.
They say if you go down to Deep Ellum, you should put your money in your shoes — y'know, because muggings are, like, so prevalent down there.
Anyway, we've got a better idea now.
When a group of teenagers recently tried attacking a Boston man outside of a KFC, he was able to fend them off by swinging a bag full of beers at them. For real.
All we're saying is, whether you fear for your life or not, carrying around a bag full of beers tonight is probably not a bad idea. — Cory Graves
Yung Lean at Trees
Be prepared to get turnt down at Trees tonight, because 18-year-old Swedish rapper Yung Lean is the epitome of downtrodden hip-hop. For a rapper, he's emo as hell, even going so far as to call his band the Sad Boys. To their credit, though, there's not a ton of stuff out there that necessarily sounds that similar to the outfit's somewhat controversial, generally well-received Unknown Memory LP. — CG
Die Hard at The Magnolia
In a lengthy but poignant essay for Movie Fone, film critic Drew Taylor argues that Die Hard is, hands down, the greatest Christmas flick ever made. He reasons that, like Home Alone, another contender for the title, Die Hard is full of scenes of bad guys getting their asses kicked. In this case, though, there's 100 percent more F-bombs, boobs and cocaine. Yippee ki-yay motherfuckers. — CG
Alex Clare at House of Blues
As someone who has done a fair bit of touring with a band, I can attest to how crazy hard it can be, at times, to eat healthy on the road. Sometimes gas station junk really is the only option. Staying kosher on the road, though, like Clare does, is damn near impossible. To make things even more complicated for himself, the staunchly religious British singer-songwriter and Orthodox Jew doesn't travel or perform on the Sabbath. It's a miracle this show is happening, really. — CG
Dallas Observer Music Awards at Granada Theater
Congratulations to all the nominees on their nominations! Congrats, too, to all the bands that played the awards showcase throughout Deep Ellum on Saturday — and also to those behind throwing that bash. We heard nothing but great things. Here's hoping all that positive juju carries over to tonight's awards ceremony, where the winners of the awards will be revealed. The scheduled performances and appearances suggests a strong follow-up: Just like he has the last two years, our favorite local comic, Paul Varghese, is hosting, and performers at the ceremony include Blue, the Misfit, Goodnight Ned, Party Static, Sealion. Oh, and prom attire is strongly encouraged. — Trace McCaslin
