We're Pretty Sure That Law & Order: SVU Took A Dig At Tony Romo This Week.

It's no secret that the plots of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit often closely resemble popular news stories from recent months.

This season — the show's 16h, if you can believe it — has been no different. In the eight episodes that have aired thus far alone, the series has dealt with stories eerily similar to the Bryan Singer sex abuse scandal, the Donald Sterling imbroglio, the Belle Knox saga and the Slender Man murder.

But this week's episode, titled Spousal Privilege, managed to somehow even top this outrageous pace, as it intertwined elements of the Jennifer Lawrence nude photo leak story and Adrian Peterson's child abuse case into a larger story that closely resembles the Ray Rice scandal. In the episode, a retired NFL player named A.J. Martin is caught on security video clocking his girlfriend Paula in the stairwell while leaving a fancy gala, and then dragging her lifeless body to his car. When questioned by police both Rice Martin and his girlfriend claim that she provoked him and charges needn't be pressed. Oh, and then they get married and start telling the authorities to butt out of their lives.

And yet, for some inexplicable reason, Tony Romo gets thrown under the bus in the episode, too.

While under oath in the episode's final act, assistant district attorney Rafael Barba goes down an oddly familiar path while questioning Paula: “You were a lifestyle reporter for the local TV news,” he says. “But you gave that up, didn't you? Is it fair to say your life revolves around A.J.?”

Um, what?

Why the need to allude to the fact that Candice Crawford gave up her gig hosting CW33's Up All Night segment in 2011 ahead of her nuptials to Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo?

Is it possible that this was just a way for SVU showrunner Warren Leight — and lifelong New Yorker — to get into Romo's head before this Sunday night's contest between his Giants and the Cowboys? Might it just be some lingering bitterness over the fact that Eli Manning's thrown twice as many interceptions as Romo has this year?

In any case, it's a bit of an odd jab considering that the biggest crime Romo ever committed was jetting off to Los Cabos the week before a playoff game.

For shame, SVU. For shame.
