As it turns out, the hardest place to live in the United States is Appalachian Kentucky. The New York Times determined as much by scoring every county in the U.S. based on things like education, median household income, unemployment rate, disability rate, life expectancy and obesity.
At the other end of the spectrum, North Texas ranks firmly on the “doing better” end of the Times' ratings scale. Or course, we tend to agree.
Plus, we're guessing people in Kentucky have a lot more to worry about than things like which of these kickass ways they're going to spend their night.

Slayer at Verizon Theatre
Despite guitarist Jeff Hanneman's death and the firing of co-founding drummer Dave Lombardo last year, the heaviest — and currently the most culturally relevant — of metal's Big Four has continued touring and is now close to wrapping up work on its 12th studio album. Fellow heavy metal heroes Suicidal Tendencies and Exodus open.
Alvvays at City Tavern
Jangly Toronto indie-poppers, Alvvays will perform at City Tavern tonight. And despite the words “Absolutely Free” appearing on the show's poster, that isn't in reference to the price of admission here. Rather, it's the name of the also Toronto-based psych trio that'll open tonight, right after Denton's Dripping Wet.
Misfits at Gas Monkey Live
These days, the Misfits' ever-revolving lineup includes one original member, bassist Jerry Only, as well as former Black Flag guitarist Dez Cadena and Murphy's Law drummer Eric “Chupacabra” Arce. Say what you will about their goofy haircuts and “Every day is Halloween!” mantra, but the band's iconic skull logo is, perhaps, second only to Black Flag's four bars as the most enduring and recognizable rock insignia of all time. That should, at least, count for something.
Broad City Live at Kessler Theater (Sold Out)
Upright Citizens Brigade alumns Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer are the stars of Comedy Central's current hit odd-couple comedy Broad City, which will kick off its second season in January. In the duo's live shows, though, they whip out all that UCB training, pulling out lip-synching, dancing, stand-up comedy chops, impersonations and pretty much anything else they can come up with to prove they're more than just a couple of cable television actors.
Fourteenth Anniversary at Cosmos Bar
Offering up the best pizza and Asian options you'll find at any bar around, serving up stiff drinks and laying claim to one of the most expertly curated jukeboxes in the city have proved a winning formula for this Lakewood watering hole, which celebrates 14 years in business this evening.
