Brit rock outfit alt-J is in town tonight, which means a few thousand of you already have tonight's plans well locked down. That show's also been long sold out, so that also means there are just as many of you bummed out and looking for a decent backup plan.
Never fear, Punktendo is here. Thanks to some enterprising young designer, all your favorite NES games will soon be modded out to feature your favorite old school punk musicians. For instance, there's Golf, which now stars a blue mohawked Fat Mike avatar, and the Descendents-nodding martial arts game,Milo Fu.
It adds a refreshing spin on those childhood classics, sure. But at the end of the day, it's still old school NES we're talking here, and with the gameplay on those old titles remaining relatively unchanged the novelty won't last long here. Go ahead and enjoy it while it lasts, yes, and then find your next move below. — Cory Graves
alt-J at South Side Ballroom (Sold Out)
Despite any backlash forever buzzing British indie-electro outfit alt-J may have received thus far for its over-hyped first record, it hasn't seemed to slow the band down too much. After selling out both the Granada and House of Blues last year, the band was able to repeat the feat with tonight's South Side Ballroom show. Pretty impressive stuff, regardless of what you think of the band or its recently released sophomore LP. — CG
Spider Bags at Rubber Gloves
On Spider Bags' fourth LP, the North Carolina rockers have begun to shy away from the drunken, three-chord garage rock and towards a bit more ambitious sound. While the band's Merge debut does find it tackling slightly more mature lyrical subject matter, it's broadened backing tracks are still as messy-sounding as ever. Austin's always fun John Wesley Coleman, whose own sound remains as alcohol-fueled as ever, opens. — CG
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas at Sundown (Free)
The movie adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's semi-autobiographical story is probably best viewed while drinking. Luckily, it's showing at a bar! You won't be on the same crazy drugs that Johnny Depp's character is (hopefully), but you'll probably still be able to appreciate the film nonetheless. — Chelsea Upton
Lucinda Williams at Majestic Theatre
You'll be hard-pressed to find an artist more well-respected among her peers than Lucinda Williams, although, admittedly it did take the general public a bit longer to catch on in that regard. The fearless singer-songwriter is still hard at work, too. Though her last swing through town was in celebration of the 25th anniversary of her breakthrough, self-titled LP, she's supporting a brand new double album this go-round. — CG
Braindead Brewing Meet and Greet at Common Table
The owners of Deep Ellum's forthcoming Braindead Brewing have been hard at work building out what will soon become the neighborhood's first brewpub. While “winter-ish” is still as hard of a deadline they'll put on the brewpub's eventual opening, the brains behind the operation will be on hand at Common Table this evening, in conjunction with North Texas Beer Week, to answer any and all questions about their venture. — CG
Nick Carter, Jordan Knight at House of Blues
Backstreet's not back, per se, but this offering from a couple of not-so-new kids on the block will likely titillate plenty of aging North Texans, many of which probably wouldn't admit to being all that into this thing. It's OK; you do you. — CG
