Each week, we take a survey of the local music scene and try to determine which acts in town are really putting in work and seeing it pay off. Which bands have the most intriguing shows coming up? Which bands are getting the most press around town? Which bands have accomplished the most notable feats of late? Based off these criteria, our music writers submit a list to be weighted and compiled into a master list revealed each week in this here space. We like to think it's fairly revealing. Oak Cliff native Edie Brickell is most known for fronting the band New Bohemians, whose biggest success was the 1988 hit single “What I Am.”
Thanks largely to how busy Brickell's been in recent years — she's done an album and tour with Steve Martin and co-wrote an off Broadway musical — she hasn't played in town with her old band in a decade. That changes this weekend, when Brickell and New Bohemians headline the North Oak Cliff Music Festival, which goes down at Lake Cliff Park.
The fest makes the second time Brickell has topped our weekly, local music power rankings, but her first time alongside the Bohemians. Other bands on that bill in this week's rankings include South Dallas Funk Revue (Bobby Patterson and The Relatives) and Seryn.
Meanwhile, another Oak Cliff performance — namely This Will Destroy You's Kessler show — was responsible for this week's No. 2 act as well. That show marked the band's first in town since releasing its new album last month.
Snow tha Product and Reagan James also held strong this week thanks to appearances on television. The latter lives to sing another week thanks to her successful performance of Lorde's “Team” on this week's episode of The Voice, and the former not only rhymed alongside David Banner, King Los, Treach and Vic Mensa during one of last week's many BET Hip Hop Awards cyphers, but also released a new, Ty Dolla $ign-featuring single as well.
Then there was Daniel Markham, Party Static and Blue, the Misfit, each of which premiered tracks from their upcoming albums. Blue's track, called “Wild,” also features Sam Lao, who will appear at this weekend's Chevy Woods-headlined Red Bull Sound Select show.
Elsewhere: Skeleton Coast performed its final shows; Centro-matic re-did the Squidbillies theme song; New Fumes and Def Rain appeared on the Flaming Lips' new Beatles tribute disc; Parquet Courts and Young Ejecta got new names; and Leon Bridges was added to next month's Untapped lineup.
