Have you ever wondered exactly what makes a tattoo permanent? According to this TED video, it's because to your body a tattoo is an infection that your body keeps on fighting, mostly in vain, for the rest of its life.
It's a pretty fascinating concept, really, and one that totally reshapes the way we previously thought about getting inked up. In a similar vein — pun intended — this long list of tonight's goings on has totally reshaped everything we'd previously thought about how Mondays are supposed to be boring. — Cory Graves
Boris, Nothing and Ceremony at Trees
Here's a good mix of music tonight: 20-plus-year music veterans from Japan, Boris, plus California punk band Ceremony and Philly's ever-loquacious Nothing. If you bump into Rubber Gloves owner Josh Baish at the show, ask him to tell you about the time he lost his ear at Boris show. It's a good one. — Chase Whale
Motown: the Musical at Winspear Opera House
Because Berry Gordy Jr. did a whole hell of a lot more than serve as the father and grandfather to the members of LMFAO someone thought it right to write a Broadway musical about the former professional boxer. Motown: the Musical not only tells the story of Gordy's discovery of legends like Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye and singlehandedly creating the American soundtrack of the '60s, but of the country's shifting social and political climates as well. Gordy's Motown label was responsible for 79 charting albums as well, so you know the music in this one is top notch to boot.. Motown runs through August 16. — CG
Benise at House of Blues
Spanish guitarist calls his music “nueva flamenco,” which really just means it's a Latin-flavored version of the instrumental New Age music that plays in that store in the mall that sells all the power crystals, rain sticks and beaded doors. — CG
Rational Anthem, Street Eaters, Stymie, Half Truths at 1919 Hemphill
I love post-punk. There's something cool about a bunch of old dudes still chasing the dream and giving it all they've got. That pretty much describes Oakland's Street Eaters in a nutshell. Also playing is Rational Anthem, Stymie and Half Truths, a band 1919 Hemphill categorizes as “bro-core.” I don't know about you, but whoever coined that term should quit a life. — CW
Elvis Depressedly, Alex G. at The Prophet Bar
This evening indie wunderkind Mat Cothran (read: Elvis Depressedly, Coma Cinema) brings his brand of downtrodden, lo-fi rock to The Prophet Bar stage. He's currently on tour with Philly's Alex G., whose own prolific catalog boasts a similar DIY quality to Cothran's. Opening this one are locals Eyes, Wings and Many Other Things and The Vliets, the latter of which will be offering up free copies of its LP on colored vinyl. Not too bad for a Monday night. — CG
The Longshots at Lola's (Free)
Being as the distinctly Fort Worth garage punk outfit The Longshots released a new, two-song EP last week, does that make this free show an album release, of sorts? Does it really even matter? Fat Wreck Chords trio The Dirty Nil and local, '90s-leaning punks The Buzzkills open. — CG
