Dallas Food Is For The Children. Also, Armadillo Ale Works' Rad Brunch Money Brew Is Back.
Welcome to The Spread, our weekly feature that aims to share all the area restaurant, food and beverage industry news that's fit to print. Except, this is the Internet, so space isn't a concern. Also: Good thing, because this is Dallas and this town always has breaking restaurant news going down like whoa.
Dallas is for the children, y'all.
And, in the spirit of helping out area kids prior to the start of the impending school season, Hypnotic Donuts will be hosting a water balloon fight where attendees are encouraged to bring as many water balloons as they can — or just donate $25 — to throw five balloons at any of the shop's staff. Proceeds from the event will go to help Dallas Afterschool improve the quality of after school and summer programs throughout the area. Mark your calendars: This one takes place on Saturday, July 26, at Lakeside Baptist Church, starting at 4 p.m.
Another upcoming event for the kids comes in the way of Greenville Avenue Pizza Company and its second annual Slices for Supplies event. On Monday, August 11, from 5 to 8 p.m., customers that bring at least one school supply to the Lower Greenville spot will get a free one-topping slice.
Meanwhile, youth outreach program and pop-up restaurant venture Cafe Momentum has been beefing up its staff in preparation for the launch of its full-service restaurant. Director Chad Houser recently hired Eric Shelton as chef de cuisine and Justin Box as executive sous chef at the spot. So far, no lease has been secured for a space, and we're all still waiting on an exact location. But, in the meatime, catering services are available from the venture.
Speaking of new ventures: The recently announced Smoked Dallas has added a couple of names to the lineup of goodies that it will have available. The critically acclaimed Louie Mueller BBQ and Haute Sweets Patisserie have now been confirmed for the event.
Out in Bishop Arts, meanwhile, Zoli's NY Pizza has a new deal for families — or just the unashamed pizzaphile: The “Mother Effer” is a $35 combo that contains enough entrees and sides to feed three or four people, or individuals who can't choose between Zoli's menu items.
Over in the Design District, Ascension Coffee has an offer of a different kind: On Thursday, July 17, from 7 to 10 p.m. the shop will be hosting a cigar night, with cigars provided by Elite Cigar Cafe — y'know just in case you wanted a little smoke to got with the cafes and wines you'll order after valeting your car.
As for opening news? Phil's Philly Grill is opening its first standalone location in Addison. The fast-casual cheesesteak concept is slated to open at the end of this month in Prestonwood Town Center on Beltline Road. The space will have a deliver-to-table format with an open kitchen and patio seating, as well as a selection of wine and local craft beer. West Village, on the other hand, will be home to two new California-based concepts: Public School, a gastropub with a grammar school theme, focuses on upscale bar food and local microbrews and craft beers, and is set to open before the end of 2014; and
Eureka, a gourmet beer and burger chain, is slated to open in November. Both ventures will be locatedat the intersection of McKinney and CityPlace West. In the nearby Quadrangle, Blue Mesa spin-off TNT Tacos & Tequila will be opening this fall with a composed of local ingredients and breakfast tacos that you can order all day long.
In brew news, is releasing a second batch of Brunch Money. New 22-ounce bottles will be available in select stores this month, providing people who missed out on the quickly sold-out first release of this surprising delight the chance to procure some of the breakfast-time brews for themselves. For a complete list of retailers set to be offering the limited release, follow Armadillo Ale on Facebook, as there's no telling when it'll be brewed again.
Speaking of limited releases: Look out for Rabbit Hole Brewing's Centennial Pale Ale, which is set to come out by the end of August. It will be a single-batch, single-hop pale ale made specifically for summertime drinking. In the meantime, Rabbit Hole will be having a Tap Takeover at Goodfriend Beer Garden & Burger House on Thursday, July 17, at 4 p.m. with four brews on tap.
