Local Natives, Future Islands, Foxygen and More Top Early 2014 Index Festival Announces.
On Tuesday night, a new wrench was thrown into the Index Festival concept, with the earliest bands booked to play this year's Deep Ellum-wide, September 26, 27 and 28 affair announced amidst a free-to-attend, four-act showcase at Trees.
Why was it revealed this way? Because, best as we could tell, the annual Spune- and Trees-backed Deep Ellum offering could do it this way.
Which is as good a reason as any, we suppose.
And so, after an opening set from the Houston-based production collective The Wrestlers and a follow-up, once-again-fiery display from the ever-adored area hip-hop duo A.Dd+, the first 12 of the 24 bands that would be announced on this night, were revealed — and by Corby Davidson, host of the afternoon drive-time show “The Hardline” on Sportsradio 1310-AM The Ticket, who was all too quick to share with the 300 or so attendees on this night that, though his is a sports-first station, The Ticket pays more actual, legit attention to the goings-on in the music world than most. Which was a fair and necessary point to be made (even if Davidson would stumble through the names of some of the acts he'd been tasked with announcing).
Among those earliest reveals? Local Natives, How To Dress Well, Blitzen Trapper, White Denim, Doomtree, Lord Huron and Quiet Company.
Then came another performance — this one courtesy of Austin's always-showcase-ready Ume, fronted by the well-put-together and always-bursting-with-energy guitar impresario that is Lauren Larson — and, afterward, another set of reveals from Davidson came.
Included in the second group of announces: Future Islands, Kaiser Chiefs, Felice Brothers, Lee Fields, Anamanaguchi and Foxygen.
In total, 24 of Index's eventual 90 performers were revealed on this night before Dallas production duo Booty Fade took to the stage and forcibly pushed the night toward a dance-filled close.
In the coming weeks, more acts — and, organizers promise, more headliners — will be announced. In the meantime, three-day passes will be available for purchase to the general public at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, starting at $75 a pop right here.
