Master Your Craft with Parquet Courts.
Life has been rough lately. Miley Cyrus’ home was robbed, Justin Beiber got caught being an idiot (again), Chris Brown was released from jail (hide your daughters) and — we're just guessing here — someone in Hollywood got a divorce.
But all of that is nothing compared to this: Last week, a flight heading from L.A. to Philadelphia had to make an emergency landing in Kansas City because of a party-pooping dog on board. The pup couldn't stop fertilizing the plane and U.S. Airways couldn't control the cleanup.
In any case, we hope none of your plans tonight are derailed by any similar shit going down. — Chase Whale
Parquet Courts, Swearin' and Radioactivity at Dada
Between the 100,000 miles of touring that the Brooklyn-via-Denton outfit Parquet Courts has logged in the past year, the critical acclaim of last year's Light Up Gold and its televised appearances on places like Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers' late-night programs, it seems Parquet Courts has officially been propelled from garage rock hopeful to indie rock savior. That reputation was all but cemented with last week's extensive Grantland feature, which called Parquet Courts “The Last Great New York Band.” Last we spoke to the band's head man Andrew Savage, though, he was fairly adamant about the fact that the place a song was written doesn't necessarily give any one city any more ownership of his work than any other. Still, the fact that Parquet Courts will be performing in Dallas on the day when its widely anticipated Sunbathing Animal LP is released has to count for something, right? — Cory Graves
The Hudson Falcons at Three Links
For 15 years now, New Jersey punk-and-roll outfit The Hudson Falcons has remained a steady force in the classic punk-adoring underground. Of the two punk shows going down on Elm Street tonight, this one will probably the destination for folks who opt for the less mainstream route — or at least who prefer punk shows from bands that weren't just the subject of a 4,000-word feature on Grantland. Dallas rockers Plissken and Memphis Linzy open. — CG
French Film Festival USA at Angelika Film Center
Quel est votre favori film français? No clue? Discover some new French cinema at the Angelika Film Center this week. The French Film Festival USA kicked off yesterday and runs through June 5. Here are six flicks worth catching: Under the Rainbow (A Bout du Conte), Tour de Force (La Grande Boucle), A Monkey On My Shoulder (A Coeur Ouvert), It Boy (20 Ans D’ecart), Jappeloup and Little Lion (Comme un Lion). Get your French on. — Chase Whale
The Lost Boys at Alamo Drafthouse
If you haven’t seen Joel Schumacher’s The Lost Boys, 1.) shame on you and 2.) stop what you’re doing and join The Frog Brothers and Corey Haim in this fight against punk rock vampires led by Kiefer Sutherland. This film features all the shirtless sax-rock, party mullets and violence your week could possibly need. Yeah. — CW
Thank You A Lot Screening at Angelika Film Center
Thank You A Lot made its festival rounds earlier this year by screening at Austin's SXSW Film Festival and then popping up at the Dallas International Film Festival. The film follows Jack Hand (Dallas native Blake DeLong) as a down-on-his-luck music manager with a not-so-great reputation who brings on his estranged father (real-life country music singer James Hand) to record an album so he can keep his job. Writer and director Matt Muir, producer Chris Ohlson, hip hop artist Da'Shade Moonbeam, DeLong and Hand will be in attendance for a Q&A following the showing. Worth noting: This screening is happening because of word-of-mouth, which is really impressive. — CW
Hoodie Allen at House of Blues
Allen's hoards of adoring teens helped him sell out South Side Ballroom, The Prophet Bar and the House of Blues — where he'll once again perform tonight — on recent trips through town. We don't expect tonight to be much different, especially considering Allen's turn at last month's Suburbia Fest. The upside for you older Hoodie fans? Despite the huge crowd that's bound to show up tonight, we're guessing the lines at the bar will be nonexistent. — CG
