Hypnotic Donuts Gets Baked and North Texas Cleans Up At The World Beer Cup.
Welcome to The Spread, our weekly feature that aims to share all the area restaurant, food and beverage industry news that's fit to print. Except, this is the Internet, so space isn't a concern. Also: Good thing, because this is Dallas and this town always has breaking restaurant news going down like whoa.
If you've looked at your calendar for the month, you might have noticed that Easter happens to fall on another holy day of sorts this year.
As such, and in order to celebrate the so-called stoner holiday that is 4/20, Hypnotic Donuts is making a special “stash box” filled with six stoner-friendly doughnut flavors that don't normally appear on the regular menu.
“We wanted to do something funky with flavors that go good with doughnuts,” says Hypnotic manager Ashleigh Patterson.
The only catch? You'll have to pick up your box on Saturday, as the White Rock area shop is closed this Sunday. Know this, too: The boxes will be available on a first-come, first-served basis and on a limited supply. So you'll have to prep in advance if you want to enjoy these treats in time for the holiday.
And, hey, even if they do happen to run out these special edition munchies before you've gotten yours, rest assured: This won't be the last time these holiday treats. Says Hypnotic owner James St. Peter: “We'll blow it out next year a lot more since we'll actually be open that day.”
Meanwhile, North Texas craft beer seems to be coming up in the world. Over the past weekend, breweries from Dallas and Fort Worth alike received honors for their entries in the World Beer Cup. To that end, Community Beer Co. took home gold for their Witbier in the Belgian-style Witbier category, and both Deep Ellum Brewing Co. and Rahr & Sons Brewing Co. took home bronzes for their 4 Swords Belgian-style Quad and Storm Cloud English-style IPA, respectively. To put the victories in perspective, just note that each of the entrants competed against more than 40 contestants per category, thus making these local wins all the more glorious.
Speaking of beer: The folks at Lakewood Brewing Co. recently stepped up to the beer big leagues by signing a distribution deal with Andrews Distributing (read: the entity responsible for putting names like Samuel Adams and Blue Moon on the map and on the shelves nationally). The deal was made, says the local brewery, so it could focus more on the brewing side of things. In the meantime, fans of the beer can still look forward to finding their favorites on local shelves, as Lakewood will still be brewing and bottling out of their Garland facility. Just expect to see more of it in the future.
In other beer news, Henderson Avenue's recently opened Black Forest Biergarten officially changed its name to Glass Boot Biergarten, after the German-style beer garden was informed of another area businesswith the words “Black Forest” in its name and opted to rebrand out of respect. Glass Boot has several German beers on draft, including German-style brews from local brewers Franconia, to accompany a menu of sausage-centric German favorites.
Just down the road, the Austin-based Houndstooth Coffee will get a feel for its new Henderson Avenue location before it officially opens this summer with a series of pop up events around the city. The shop's official opening may not be until July 1, but they've been collaborating with a few businesses on nearby Lower Greenville, and the next set of pop ups will be announced via their Twitter account.
But when one restaurant opens, another one closes. This week, we see the end of Work. in Deep Ellum. The barbecue place officially closed its doors recently, but you may still be able to get the barbecue. Pitmaster Doug Pickering and his barbecue hope to pop up at brick-and-mortar places around Dallas in the coming months, despite the lounge-y bar and barbecue joint space not working out.
Meanwhile, burger-lovers out in Fort Worth saw Brewsters join the ranks of Rodeo Goat and a host of other places where the M.O. is burgers, fries and beer. There, diners and Pulp Fiction fanatics alike can try a Big Kahuna Burger, which the joint describes as its signature sandwich topped with bacon, crumbled potato chips and a signature sauce. Also on the menu will be a peanut butter burger with cheddar bacon and crunchy peanut butter, among a variety of other options. Brewsters also has a variety of beers to choose from — more than 60 of them on tap, to be more specific.
