Ranch Dressing Reaches Bizarre New Heights and The Slip Inn Announces The End of Its Run.
Welcome to The Spread, our weekly feature that aims to share all the area restaurant, food and beverage industry news that's fit to print. Except, this is the Internet, so space isn't a concern. Also: Good thing, because this is Dallas and this town always has breaking restaurant news going down like whoa.
Who would've thought ranch dressing could cause a worldwide media stir?
Not Il Cane Rosso proprietor Jay Jerrier, who, as a deterrent to customers seeking ranch dressing to dip their pizza crusts in, decided to affix a bottle of the condiment to a wall in his pizzeria and declare that a side of that buttermilk goodness will cost customers a cool $1,000 if they really, really want it.
What started out as a joke, though, has since picked up some serious steam, thanks in no part to some furious Redditors, who caused it to go viral. The news has even spread to the U.K..
Yes, contention over the ubiquitous dressing is everywhere — and even escalated, as Jerrier's Neapolitan-style restaurant has now gone so far as to ban customers from bringing in ranch dressing from the outside.
The attention is hardly hurting Jerrier's business, though. Quite the contrary, actually. Yesterday, Jerrier took to social media to announce that business yesterday was 30 percent that above the sales his restaurant does on a normal Tuesday.
Also? Jerrier's really not that big of a ranch snob. If you want ranch at one of his establishments, just head to Zoli's NY Pizza Tavern in Oak Cliff, where his shop not only makes its own in-house version of the dressing but will even go so far as to put it on the pizza for you.
Moving on to things that are quite unquestionably awesome: Four Corners Brewery is now canning its beer, but with a twist. The Trinity Groves brewery's cans include a fully removable lid. The “360 End” can design allows drinkers to experience the full aroma and flavor of their selected beer by basically just turning the can into a cup. Already, FCB has released its Local Buzz, El Chingon and and Block Party Porter in 12-ounce six-packs for local distribution.
Meanwhile, Rabbit Hole Brewing has stepped into the world of parody. The team was featured in a three-part series on YouTube with the Beer Betties crew to discuss their 10/6, 561 and Rapture brews. The videos have a Breaking Bad theme, assuming you're not yet over that series.
Chances are, however, that you're not over this news just yet: Just this morning, the news broke that Henderson Avenue's revered hip-hop-flavored dive The Slip Inn will be shuttering its doors this weekend. Owners say they're just moving the spot in an attempt to “evolve a bit,” while claiming that a new Slip Inn is on the way. An announcement on where, exactly, that new spot will be is a few months away, owners say.
On the other hand, Uptown cocktail hotspot The Standard Pour is still going strong, with plans to celebrate its two-year anniversary on Thursday, March 27, from 8 p.m. until close. The event will have a Traveling Circus & Medicine Show theme, with jugglers, fortune tellers, psychics and fire breathers on hand.
The circus not your thing? How about a game of bocce ball at Vagabond? The newly-opened J. Pepe's replacement along Lower Greenville has filled the swimming pool that took up that old spot's back patio portion and replaced it with a bocce ball court. Now you can play a round while you enjoy craft cocktails, beef tongue pastrami, duck fat steak fries and build-your-own-burger options.
We're guessing they have ranch there, too.
